Get ready for a spooky season treat as basketball takes center stage in an unusual locale! The University of North Texas (UNT) Mean Green men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to ignite fan excitement with the inaugural “Nightmare on Elm Street Basketball Tip-off” event. Mark your calendars for October 16th, as the heart of Denton Square transforms into a basketball haven for a unique season preview.

This exciting tip-off showcase is part of Denton’s broader Halloween festivities, promising a blend of sports enthusiasm and community spirit. Elm Street, specifically between Hickory and Oak Streets in Denton Square, will be the vibrant setting for a pop-up basketball court. Mean Green devotees will have a fantastic opportunity to connect with the 2024-25 basketball squads, offering a sneak peek into what promises to be a thrilling season of UNT basketball action.

“Engaging with the Denton community is a top priority for us, and we are always looking to deepen our local connections,” stated UNT Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley. “Bringing our basketball programs to downtown Denton Square and collaborating with the city for this distinctive event is something we’re really enthusiastic about. We believe this ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ event will introduce UNT basketball to even more potential fans and create a memorable experience.”

This family-friendly event is free and open to everyone. While the official start time is still to be announced, anticipation is already building. Adding to the excitement, the Texas Woman’s University (TWU) NCAA Division II national runner-up basketball team and Denton ISD will also be participating, making it a true celebration of local basketball talent.

The Mean Green women’s basketball team, led by head coach Jason Burton, is riding high after a record-breaking season. In just their first season under Burton, they achieved an unprecedented 23 wins and clinched a share of the American Athletic Conference regular season championship. Building on this success, the team is poised for another strong campaign.

Meanwhile, the UNT men’s basketball team, under the guidance of head coach Ross Hodge, is also coming off an impressive season. Hodge steered the Mean Green to 19 victories last year, including notable wins against LSU, Memphis, and SMU. Their journey extended to the second round of the 2024 NIT, and they stand out as one of only seven teams nationwide to have secured a national postseason tournament win in each of the past four years.
