From its inception, Broad Street Ministry has been deeply committed to serving Philadelphia’s most vulnerable populations, particularly individuals facing low income and housing insecurity. The Ministry’s programs are intentionally designed to address critical needs within the community. At the heart of their outreach is the Hospitality Collaborative, their flagship initiative, which extends support to over 7,000 individuals annually. This comprehensive program provides a daily meal for nearly 250 guests, alongside essential health services, personal care provisions, clothing assistance, therapeutic art programs, and a vital mailing address service utilized by over 3,000 people, offering stability and connection for those without permanent housing.
Recognizing the interconnectedness of social issues, Broad Street Ministry also collaborates with the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. This partnership focuses on providing crucial support to formerly incarcerated individuals, assisting them in securing employment opportunities and navigating essential case management services, aiding their successful reintegration into society. Demonstrating its commitment to both its community and its historic building, Broad Street Ministry successfully secured a $250,000 National Fund grant, amplified by over $1.5 million in matching funds raised by the congregation. These funds were instrumental in undertaking critical repairs to stabilize the stone masonry of the church’s two prominent towers. This essential exterior restoration work ensured the structural integrity of the towers and the ongoing safety of everyone utilizing the building, preserving this landmark for continued service.
In a strategic shift in March 2022, Broad Street Ministry made a significant decision to discontinue traditional church services. This change allowed the Ministry to intensify its focus on providing direct pastoral care and support to individuals grappling with housing instability and financial hardship. This evolution underscores Broad Street Ministry’s unwavering dedication to its core mission: serving as a welcoming and vital resource for those most in need within the Philadelphia community, offering not just services, but also dignity and hope.
