For Chicagoans in the know, the name Gale Street Inn conjures up images of a beloved dining institution, a family favorite nestled on Milwaukee Avenue in Jefferson Park. Growing up in the city, the original Gale Street Inn was synonymous with special occasions and consistently great food. While a second location in Mundelein, known as “Diamond Lake,” existed, whispers suggested it wasn’t quite the same magic as the city spot. However, times change, and so do restaurants. Recently, news of new ownership and revitalized menus at the Diamond Lake Gale Street Inn piqued interest, promising a fresh take on a classic name.
Intrigued, a visit was in order. Stepping onto the grounds of the Diamond Lake location is like entering a different world. The standalone building boasts ample space and a sprawling dining area, immediately evoking the charm of a classic supper club. The welcoming atmosphere hints at evenings filled with not just delicious food, but also, in time, live entertainment. The spacious dining room easily accommodates different party sizes, ensuring a comfortable and intimate dining experience, a welcome consideration in today’s world. The location itself feels like a tranquil escape from the city bustle, a retreat to “rural America” where the presence of Diamond Lake across the street enhances the feeling of serenity. Here, worries seem to melt away as you settle in with a cocktail, ready to enjoy an evening of culinary delights, momentarily leaving behind the outside world – masks on for entry and exit, of course, but off for the true enjoyment of the meal.
Our server, Mario, set a relaxed and welcoming tone from the start. There was no rush to order, allowing ample time to peruse the extensive menu and daily specials. The wine list is noteworthy in its breadth, though for those preferring cocktails, a classic vodka martini proved to be a perfect choice.
The evening began with a trio of appetizers: Steamed Mussels, plump and flavorful; crispy Fried Calamari; and savory Meatballs with Polenta, a truly delightful combination. The Lamb Lollipops, observed enviously at a neighboring table, are already marked for the next visit. For soup, the Lobster Bisque was the standout choice, especially on a Friday evening. While the Baked French Onion Soup is a daily offering, the fresh soup of the day, made with locally sourced ingredients, felt like an unmissable opportunity – and it lived up to the anticipation, proving to be truly exceptional.
The menu is comprehensive, featuring a wide array of salads. The Roasted Beet Salad, a vibrant mix of red and gold beets with a tangy house dressing, was a shared starter that quickly became a source of friendly contention – its deliciousness prompting a desire for a larger portion!
For the main courses, the selections were equally impressive. The Gale Street Prime Rib (queen cut), slow-roasted to perfection and served with beef au jus and a baked potato, was a classic choice executed flawlessly. The half slab of Ribs, a house specialty since 1963, lived up to its legendary status, even under new ownership, accompanied by creamy mashed potatoes. Finally, the Broiled Salmon Piccata with spinach, bathed in a special lemon beurre blanc sauce, was simply described as “to die for.”
The list of specialties at Gale Street Inn is extensive, each dish seemingly vying for the title of “most enticing.” Meat lovers will find plenty to choose from, alongside a daily selection of fresh fish. A dedicated Kids Menu ensures that families are warmly welcomed. Pasta dishes and “surf and turf” options further broaden the appeal, with the Prime New York Strip already earmarked for future exploration.
Dessert brought a satisfying conclusion to the meal with shared portions of Cheesecake and Creme Brulee. For those mindful of dietary needs, it’s worth noting that the menu is an impressive 90% gluten-free, with a focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients throughout. Indeed, every dish tasted remarkably fresh and undeniably delicious.
