Remembering Jake Plummer: A North Liberty Life Well-Lived

Jake Plummer, a long-time resident of the North Liberty area, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday morning at the age of 85. Known for his friendly demeanor and dedicated work ethic, Jake spent over 40 years as a Route Salesman for various companies, becoming a familiar face on routes throughout the region.

Born on August 21, 1938, in Lakeville, Indiana, Jake was the son of the late Joseph O. and Pearl A. (Laughman) Plummer. He remained a lifelong resident of this close-knit community, deeply connected to its people and places. His roots in North Liberty and the surrounding area ran deep, shaping his life and relationships.

In 1958, Jake married his beloved wife, Gail Ann Ruehle, in Lakeville. Their marriage lasted until Gail’s passing on July 3, 2023. Together, they built a family and a life centered in North Liberty. Jake is survived by his two daughters, Tracie (Ronald) Clark and Janna L. Plothow, and three sons, Randy S. (Milissa Richards) Plummer, Kelley J. Plummer, and Bobby J. Plummer. His legacy also includes six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, who will fondly remember their grandfather. He is also survived by his sisters, Lelia Masten and Jean Rice, both of Mishawaka.

Jake was predeceased by his son Ricky, five sisters, Martha Stanage, Donabelle Nolan, Evelyn Rice, Iris Tortorelli, Helen Plummer-Knepp, and eight brothers, Glen S., Richard, Joseph, Lynn, Danny, Robert O., John D., and James L. Plummer. The Plummer family has been a significant part of the North Liberty and Lakeville communities for generations.

Funeral services to celebrate Jake’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 3rd, at Gospel Center Missionary Church, located at 930 South 30th St., South Bend, IN 46615. Friends and family are invited to gather at the church two hours prior to the service to offer their support and share memories. Following the service, Jake will be laid to rest at Porter Rae Cemetery in North Liberty, in a private burial for family.

A devoted member of Gospel Center Missionary Church, Jake’s faith was an important aspect of his life. Beyond his work and faith, Jake was an enthusiastic sports fan, passionately following Notre Dame, the White Sox, Chicago Bears, and Bulls. He also dedicated his time to coaching baseball, basketball, soccer, and softball, positively impacting the lives of many young athletes in the community.
