The aroma of freshly baked bread fills the air at Clark Street Bread & Pastry, a much-awaited bakery that has finally opened its doors at the border of Echo Park and Historic Filipinotown. Behind the scenes, the team is busy with wholesale orders, while upfront, the cafe is buzzing with customers eager to sample the offerings. For owner Zack Hall, this opening marks the culmination of a long-held dream.
Hall’s vision of a brick-and-mortar retail space complete with a welcoming cafe has been years in the making. Though initially announced in 2016, the project faced numerous hurdles, including construction delays and the extensive redevelopment of the property. This location now also houses Gra, a wood-fired pizza restaurant, One Down Dog yoga studio, and other businesses, making Clark Street Bread & Pastry’s arrival a highly anticipated addition to the neighborhood.
Despite the delays in launching this flagship location, Hall’s reputation as one of Los Angeles’s most respected wholesale bakers has only grown stronger. In the intervening years, he expanded the Clark Street brand with a popular kiosk in Grand Central Market (opened in 2014) and a standalone cafe on Sunset in Echo Park proper earlier this year. This new establishment brings all aspects of Hall’s culinary expertise together under one roof, featuring a cafe serving Devoción Coffee, a tempting array of pastries and takeaway breads, and a savory menu that includes delectable options like omelettes, quiche, and bagels with lox.
The Clark Street Echo Park location offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere within a compact space. An expansive patio, adorned with brick accents and lush greenery, provides ample outdoor seating. Inside, a communal table encourages interaction, and a peek into the back reveals the bustling bakery in action. Clark Street Bread and Pastry officially welcomed its first customers on Monday morning and is now open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
