Acclaimed Indie-Pop Quintet Lake Street Dive Signs with Fantasy Records and Unveils Title Track from Highly Anticipated New Album
Lake Street Dive, the genre-bending band celebrated for their infectious blend of jazz, pop, soul, and funk, have officially announced their signing with Fantasy Records. Alongside this exciting news, they’ve dropped the title track and music video for their forthcoming album, Good Together, slated for release on June 21, 2024. Good Together marks a significant evolution for the Lake Street Dive Band. The album embodies a powerful message of unity and shared human experience, acting as a joyful counterpoint to the divisive forces prevalent in today’s society. This new work is driven by what the band describes as “joyful rebellion,” a spirit that infuses their signature energetic and danceable sound with a deeply principled core.
Drummer Mike Calabrese explains the album’s driving force: “There’s a lot to be angry about in the world right now, a lot of pain and rage and divisiveness, but it isn’t sustainable to constantly live in that anger—you need something else to keep you going. Joy is a great way to sustain yourself, and we wanted to encourage everyone to stay aware of that. In a way this album is our way of saying, ‘Take your joy very seriously.’” This ethos of finding strength and resilience in joy permeates every track of Good Together.
For this album, Lake Street Dive reunited with Grammy-winning producer Mike Elizondo, known for his work with Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, and Gary Clark Jr. Adding another layer of depth to the creative process, Good Together is the first album where all band members actively participated in songwriting from the very beginning. This collaborative approach began at Calabrese’s Vermont home, fostering a uniquely open and vulnerable environment for musical exploration. Vocalist Rachael Price reflects on this new method: “At first it was terrifying to write together in the same room, but as soon as we got started it felt so fun. We very quickly realized, ‘Oh, we need to do this again and again.’” This unified songwriting approach has expanded the band’s already impressive musical range and expressive capabilities.
To celebrate the release of Good Together, Lake Street Dive will embark on their most extensive North American tour yet, the Good Together Tour, kicking off on June 14th. The tour reaches a pinnacle with a landmark headline performance at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City on September 14th. This Madison Square Garden show represents a major milestone in the band’s career. The upcoming album follows the band’s critically acclaimed 2021 release, Obviously. Obviously garnered significant praise, with Rolling Stone noting their refreshing approach in a pop landscape often leaning towards “lo-fi, solitary-world intimacy,” highlighting Lake Street Dive’s refusal to “think small.” Downbeat further lauded the band’s ability to find “beauty in pop.” Throughout their impressive career, Lake Street Dive has consistently defied genre boundaries, seamlessly blending pop, soul, jazz, and folk to create a sound that is uniquely their own. Their captivating live performances and engaging media appearances, including features on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “CBS This Morning,” and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, have solidified their place as a major force in contemporary music. The band has also earned critical acclaim from esteemed publications such as The New York Times and the Associated Press.
Formed in Boston by Rachael Price, Bridget Kearney, Mike Calabrese, Akie Bermiss, and James Cornelison, Lake Street Dive’s origins trace back to their jazz studies at the New England Conservatory of Music. Since their formation, they have released a string of successful albums, including their breakthrough record Bad Self Portraits (2014), followed by Side Pony (2016), Free Yourself Up (2018), and Obviously (2021). In 2022, they released Fun Machine: The Sequel, a delightful EP featuring covers of songs by Bonnie Raitt, The Pointer Sisters, Carole King, and others, showcasing their versatility and musicality.
