For international students and scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas at the University of Michigan, keeping your U.S. residential information up to date is not just good practice—it’s a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requirement. You are mandated to report any changes to your U.S. residential address or phone number to the university within 10 days of the change. At U-M, this is easily managed through the Campus Personal Information section of Wolverine Access. This guide will walk you through the simple steps to ensure your records are compliant and current.
STEP 1: Access Campus Personal Information in Wolverine Access
The starting point for updating your Current Street Address is Wolverine Access, the University of Michigan’s central online portal.
- Navigate to the Wolverine Access website: https://wolverineaccess.umich.edu/
- In the search bar, type Campus Personal Information.
- Locate the Campus Personal Information tile and click on it. This will direct you to the section where you can manage your personal details.

STEP 2: Update or Verify Your Current Street Address
Once you are in the Campus Personal Information section, the next step is to update or verify your address details.
-
Click on the Addresses tab. Here, you should see at least three address types listed:
- Current Local: This address should reflect where you are currently living, and if you are in the U.S., it must be a U.S. address.
- Permanent: This is intended to be your address in your home country and should never be a U.S. address.
- SEVIS: Crucially, this must be your current U.S. residential address. It should always be a U.S. address. If you are outside the U.S., it should be your last known U.S. address or a future U.S. address if known. New students to U-M can leave this blank until they arrive in the United States.
-
To modify an existing address, click the Pencil icon next to the address you need to update. To add a new address, select Add a new address.
- Country Selection: Always verify that the country selected is correct for the address you are adding or editing. If you need to change the country, click on Change Country.

Address Format for On-Campus Housing (Excluding Northwood)
If you are living in on-campus housing, with the exception of Northwood, please adhere to the following address format:

Address Format for Off-Campus and Northwood Housing
For students living off-campus or in Northwood, use this format. Do not use this format for on-campus addresses other than Northwood.
-
Country: United States
-
Address 1: Start with your street number and street name, followed by your apartment number if applicable. Address 1 should always begin with a number (your street address number, not apartment number). Example: 123 S Main St Apt 456 or 123 S Main St. Do not include your apartment name, city, state, ZIP code, or any other information in Address 1.
- Address Formatting Tip: If you are unsure about the correct formatting, use the U.S. Postal Service website to look up your address and use the suggested format: https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?byaddress.
-
Address 2: Use this field for apartment numbers or building names. Example: Foundry Lofts Apt 123
-
Address 3: Leave this field blank.
-
City: Enter the correct city, and double-check the spelling.
-
State: Select the correct state.
-
Postal: Enter your postal code.
-
Cmps Addr: Leave blank, with no selection.

Once you have entered or edited your address details, click Ok.
-
On the subsequent page, select the Address Types that apply to this address.
This image shows the address type selection screen. Ensure you select the correct types, especially “SEVIS” for your U.S. residential address.
Remember to assign the address to the correct types:
- Current Local for your current living location in the U.S.
- Permanent for your home country address.
- SEVIS for your current U.S. residential address, which is mandatory for international students.
-
Enter the date when your address information should become effective. This date cannot be in the past. If you need the information to take effect in the future, enter a future date.
-
Click Save to finalize your address update.
-
Review the Addresses tab to confirm that all information is correct.
STEP 3: Update or Verify Your Phone Information
In addition to your current street address, it is also crucial to update your phone information.
-
Click on the Phone Numbers tab.
-
Check if you have a phone type listed as Current Address Voice. If not, click Add a phone number and choose Current Address Voice. For SEVIS compliance, your U.S. phone number must be listed under this category.
-
Confirm that the Current Address Voice phone number is a U.S. phone number. Update it if necessary. You can use other phone types (like Mobile or Permanent) for non-U.S. numbers.
-
Verify that the Current Address Voice phone number is correctly formatted. It must be 10 digits, must not start with 1 or +1, and must begin with a valid U.S. area code.
This image shows a correctly formatted U.S. phone number example. Note the 10-digit format and valid area code.
This image displays examples of incorrectly formatted phone numbers, highlighting common mistakes to avoid.
Note: Enter your number as digits only, for example, 7347649310. The system will automatically format it to 734/764-9310 if correctly entered. This automatic formatting indicates that you have entered it correctly.
-
Click Save when you are finished.
Summary Checklist for SEVIS Address/Phone Reporting
Before you finalize, quickly review this checklist to ensure you’ve met all requirements for SEVIS address and phone reporting:
- Your home country address is listed as the Permanent address.
- Your current U.S. residential address is listed as the SEVIS address.
- The SEVIS address adheres to correct U.S. address formatting standards as outlined.
- Your Current Address Voice phone number is a U.S. phone number, 10 digits long, and formatted as 555/555-5555.
By following these steps, you can easily update your current street address and phone number in Wolverine Access, ensuring you are compliant with DHS regulations and maintaining accurate records with the University of Michigan.
