Pitt Street Bridge: A Walk Through South Carolina History

The story of the Pitt Street Bridge is deeply intertwined with the history of Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island. Long before modern roadways, a simple plank bridge on barrels provided the first connection across the inlet separating the mainland from Sullivan’s Island, dating back to before the Revolutionary War. A significant historical moment occurred in 1864 when the crew of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley walked across a footbridge at this location to reach Breach Inlet for a fateful test dive. By 1898, a trolley bridge offered a more substantial crossing, which was then replaced in 1927 by the vehicle bridge that became known as Pitt Street Bridge, solidifying its place in local history.
