Union Station, prominently located on Front Street West in Toronto, Canada, is undergoing significant enhancements to improve pedestrian safety and the overall visitor experience. Starting Tuesday, November 26, 2024, and continuing through Spring 2025, the City of Toronto has initiated phase one and two of a three-phase pedestrian safety improvement project on the Front Street sidewalk directly in front of Union Station. This project aims to enhance pedestrian flow and safety without disrupting live traffic lanes. During this period, the taxi stand will be temporarily relocated slightly down Front Street, towards Bay Street, ensuring minimal disruption while construction is underway.
This pedestrian safety initiative is part of the broader Union Station Revitalization Project, a City-led effort with three core objectives: to significantly improve pedestrian movement capacity and quality, meticulously restore the station’s heritage elements, and transform Union Station into a premier destination for shopping, dining, and engaging experiences. These enhancements are designed to ensure that Union Station not only remains a functional transportation hub but also evolves into a vibrant and welcoming space within the heart of Toronto.
Beyond pedestrian improvements, Union Station continues to offer a range of updated customer services and attractions. The popular Union Winter event, featuring the Roller Express indoor roller skating rink, is back from November 28, 2024, to February 2, 2025. Navigational enhancements are also in progress with new overhead signage expected to be completed by Winter 2024. History enthusiasts can explore new exhibits in the VIA Concourse celebrating Union Station’s approaching 100-year anniversary. Furthermore, the construction of the Bay Street Bridge by Hines, facilitating pedestrian access to CIBC Square, is anticipated to conclude in early 2025. Metrolinx is also actively engaged in upgrading the rail network through the Union Station Enhancement Project, and a diverse array of food and beverage options are now available, enriching the visitor experience at Union Station, Toronto.
