Dover Street Market Los Angeles is set to host a unique pop-up installation by Arcangel Surfware, the brainchild of artist Cory Arcangel. This special event will recreate the ambiance of Arcangel Surfware’s flagship store from Norway, bringing a slice of Stavanger to the heart of downtown Los Angeles. Located within Dover Street Market, this installation offers a rare opportunity to experience the brand’s distinctive retail concept.
Arcangel Surfware, established in 2018, has its main store in Stavanger, Norway. Designed by Cory Arcangel himself, the store occupies a historically significant building in Stavanger’s Øst district, a mere stone’s throw from the waterfront. Previously a canning factory and then a rifle shop, the 34 square meter space embodies the brand’s unique blend of art and retail. The Dover Street Market Los Angeles pop-up will mirror key design elements of this Norwegian location, featuring recognizable fixtures like dump bins, baby monitors, a grid wall, and computer store carpet, all set against a backdrop of Arcangel’s artworks.
This pop-up at Dover Street Market LA will serve as the launchpad for Arcangel Surfware’s 2019 Scanner Painting capsule collection. This new line includes hand-sewn frequent flyer neck pillows and two new t-shirt designs, all inspired by Arcangel’s recent scanner painting series. These neck pillows are crafted in Stavanger, Norway, and assembled in Brooklyn, New York, using up-cycled fabric scraps from Arcangel’s scanner painting artworks. Each pillow boasts a unique design, reflecting the artistic process behind the scanner painting series, which involves textile scans printed with UV ink on IKEA Linnmon tabletops.
The two new tee-shirts debuting at Dover Street Market Los Angeles feature four-color silkscreen prints of Arcangel’s scanner paintings. Beyond the new collection, the pop-up will also present items from Arcangel Surfware’s archive, spanning the past three years. Visitors to Dover Street Market Los Angeles can expect to find pieces from the Fuck Negativity series of 2015 and 2016, along with multi-function scarves, vinyl records, and brand publications.
Arcangel explains the motivation behind bringing Arcangel Surfware to Dover Street Market Los Angeles: “Our store is quite inaccessible, open only briefly each week in a remote part of Stavanger, Norway, without an online shop. This pop-up at Dover Street Market Los Angeles is a chance to recreate our store experience for a wider audience, for a short time. We are excited to say ‘Vi ses!’ – ‘See you!’ – in LA.”
