Nestled on a distinctive block in Portland, Maine, Eventide Oyster Co. has quietly become a culinary beacon for those in the know. My initial encounter with this gem began subtly, during a dinner at Hugo’s next door. From our window perch, I watched an artist meticulously hand-letter the name onto the storefront of the then-unknown establishment. This deliberate artistry, a stark contrast to the instant gratification of a decal, sparked an undeniable curiosity. I made a mental note: Eventide Oyster Co. was a place to watch.
Portland’s Middle Street, specifically the stretch between India and Franklin, is a location easily overlooked by visitors, slightly removed from the bustling Old Port and not quite within the East End. However, for those with a discerning palate, this oversight would be a significant miss. This unassuming block, much like the concentrated culinary scene of Longfellow Square, is a powerhouse of gastronomic experiences. Just steps away from Eventide Oyster Co., you can find the acclaimed Hugo’s, the perpetually popular Duckfat, the comforting Italian flavors of Ribollita, the gastropub fare of The East Ender, and the vibrant dishes at The Pepper Club. This dense collection of eateries makes Middle Street a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Portland’s food scene.
My anticipation to visit Eventide grew, but the hectic pace of summer life delayed our first visit longer than intended, despite the growing buzz surrounding it. Finally, on a leisurely Saturday afternoon, we decided to make Eventide our starting point. The attention to detail that initially caught my eye with the hand-lettered window extended throughout the entire restaurant. From the robust stone bar to the communal picnic tables and the straightforward chalkboard menu, every element of Eventide seemed perfectly harmonized to create an inviting and focused atmosphere. It’s a place that immediately sets the stage for a memorable dining experience, and as I stepped inside, I was instantly ready for oysters.
Securing window seats, right by the very sign that had first piqued my interest, we promptly ordered homemade biscuits and a local Oxbow Farmhouse Pale Ale to begin. Starting with biscuits might seem unconventional, but trust me, it’s an essential first step at Eventide. Meredith opted for the comforting Lobster Stew, while I chose a half-dozen Maine oysters, selecting a trio of varieties: North Haven, Pemaquid Point, and Flying Point. Reflecting on that dinner at Hugo’s, a realization dawned on me – our experience at Eventide felt almost pre-ordained. Eventide shares kinship with Hugo’s, and I now strongly suspect that the delectable homemade biscuit and Pemaquid Point oyster I was presently savoring might have been previewed to us that very evening. Were we unknowingly part of the taste-testing phase for Eventide’s menu? Regardless, the oysters were simply exceptional – incredibly fresh, bursting with flavor, and sourced from the pristine waters just a short drive away. Embracing the weekend spirit, and the widely accepted notion that dessert calories are exempt on Saturdays, we indulged in a slice of Apple Pie and an Ice Cream Sandwich, concluding our meal with smiles as wide as the Casco Bay.
My visit to Eventide Oyster Co. was everything I had hoped for and more. I am genuinely excited to introduce this Portland pearl to visiting friends and family, confident that they too will be captivated by its charm and culinary excellence. Eventide Oyster Co. is not just a restaurant; it’s an integral part of the Portland food narrative, and a must-experience destination on Middle Street.
