Construction Progress on E 2nd Street in Manhattan’s East Village

Excavation work is actively progressing at 88 East 2nd Street, marking a significant step forward for the development of a new seven-story mixed-use building in the vibrant East Village neighborhood of Manhattan. This project, spearheaded by Romah Management Corporation under the direction of Manny Ashourzadeh, and designed by Gerald Caliendo Architects, promises to bring new residential and commercial spaces to this dynamic area. The structure, reaching a height of 73 feet, will encompass 19,278 square feet, featuring 22 rental units averaging 740 square feet each, alongside 2,994 square feet dedicated to commercial use, and a cellar level. Strategically positioned at the corner of East 2nd Street and First Avenue, the development is set to become a notable addition to the local landscape.

Recent photos from the site reveal that excavation has made considerable headway, reaching below street level across most of the corner property, secured by sidewalk fencing. Remnants of the previous buildings’ brick foundation walls are still visible along the site’s perimeter, along with some scattered rubble, offering a glimpse into the site’s history. Construction teams are expected to continue with below-grade work throughout the remainder of the year. Anticipation is building for the early months of 2025, when the superstructure of this exciting new building on E 2nd Street is projected to begin to emerge.

Previously, the location at 88 East 2nd Street was occupied by two low-rise commercial buildings, which were demolished earlier in the year to pave the way for this new development.

Currently, details such as renderings of the completed building or a list of residential amenities have not yet been made public. However, the location of 88 East 2nd Street offers excellent accessibility, being just a short walk from the F train at the 2nd Avenue station on Houston Street, a significant transportation hub for the East Village.

An official completion date for the development at 88 East 2nd Street is still to be announced. As construction progresses, further updates and details about this exciting addition to the East Village are anticipated.
