The iconic Famous 4th Street Deli in Philadelphia’s charming Queen Village neighborhood has once again opened its doors to eager customers on Friday, following a temporary shutdown due to health violations.
Earlier in the week, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, the beloved deli faced an unexpected closure after a city Department of Health inspection on Wednesday uncovered multiple health code violations. The inspection report detailed at least seven issues requiring immediate attention, some of which were repeat offenses, prompting the temporary cease of operations.
According to the official health inspection report, alarming violations were observed, including the presence of “mouse turds on food contact surfaces” of a deli slicer. Further evidence of rodent activity was found on food preparation tables, in corners, and concealed behind and beneath equipment throughout the deli. Inspectors also noted improper food storage and inadequate protection against insects and rodents entering through a window.
These serious health concerns led to the immediate issuance of a cease operation order, mandating the Famous 4th Street Deli to rectify the violations and undergo a successful reinspection before being permitted to reopen.
On Friday, the good news arrived as a deli employee confirmed the reopening, signaling the return of this Philadelphia institution.
Established in 1923 at the corner of 4th and Bainbridge streets, the Famous 4th Street Deli is more than just a place for overstuffed corned beef and pastrami sandwiches. It holds a special place in Philadelphia’s cultural landscape. Notably, it has become a traditional Election Day hub for Philadelphia politicians. The deli’s fame extends beyond the city, having made appearances in acclaimed films like the 1993 drama “Philadelphia” and the 2005 romantic comedy “In Her Shoes,” as well as featuring on the popular Food Network show “The Rachel Ray Show.”
The reopening of the Famous 4th Street Deli marks the return of a cherished Philadelphia landmark, ready to continue serving its famous fare to locals and visitors alike.
