The Milwaukee Street Department plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and functionality of our community. Our mission is to provide residents with well-maintained streets, parks, and recreational areas, alongside dependable services such as refuse collection, snow and ice removal, and consistent street maintenance and repair. A core part of our commitment is to address resident concerns and complaints with accuracy and courtesy, ensuring we are responsive to the needs of our local community.
Animal Trap Rentals
For residents dealing with unwanted animals on their property, the Milwaukee Street Department offers live animal cage traps for rent. These traps are suitable for both wild and domestic animals that may have entered your home, garage, or shed, or are simply present in your yard. It’s important to note that trapping wild animals is regulated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and residents should contact them for guidance before attempting to trap wildlife. Traps can be rented from the Street Department with a refundable deposit, ensuring the trap is returned clean and in working order within 30 days.
Trap Size | Deposit Cost |
---|---|
Small Traps (chipmunks, weasels, etc.) | $30 |
Medium Traps (skunks, rabbits, squirrels, etc.) | $40 |
Large Traps (raccoons, opossums, woodchucks, cats, dogs, etc.) | $50 |
Weed Control and Noxious Weeds
The Milwaukee Street Department also handles weed complaints to maintain the aesthetic and health of our neighborhoods. “Noxious weeds,” as defined here, include Canada thistle, leafy spurge, field bindweed (creeping Jenny), and any other weeds designated by ordinance or resolution. Property owners are responsible for destroying all noxious weeds on their land, including the parkway adjacent to their property. “Destroy” means completely killing weeds or eliminating above-surface growth by chemical or mechanical means, preventing them from reaching the bloom or flower stage. Annually, around May 15th, the City Mayor publishes a notice reminding all residents of their legal obligation to control noxious weeds on their property.
Snow and Ice Removal Responsibilities
Maintaining safe sidewalks during winter is a shared responsibility in Milwaukee. The South Milwaukee Municipal Code mandates that public sidewalks and adjoining crosswalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours after snowfall or accumulation stops. Failure to comply may result in the City performing the clearing and billing the property owner for the service. This ensures pedestrian safety and accessibility throughout the winter months on Milwaukee streets.
The Milwaukee Street Department is dedicated to providing essential services that keep our city safe, clean, and enjoyable for all residents. We encourage residents to reach out with any questions or concerns related to these services.
