Construction Progress at 88 East 2nd Street in Manhattan’s East Village

Excavation work is actively progressing at 88 East 2nd Street, marking a significant step forward for the upcoming seven-story mixed-use building in Manhattan’s vibrant East Village neighborhood. Located at the prominent corner of East 2nd Street and First Avenue, this development, spearheaded by Romah Management Corporation and designed by Gerald Caliendo Architects, promises to bring new residential and commercial spaces to the area. The 73-foot-tall structure is planned to encompass 19,278 square feet, featuring 22 rental units averaging 740 square feet each, alongside 2,994 square feet dedicated to commercial use, and a cellar level.

Recent on-site photographs reveal substantial excavation below street level, secured by sidewalk fencing. Visible along the perimeter are remnants of the previous buildings’ brick foundation walls, along with scattered rubble, offering a glimpse into the site’s history before this new chapter of development at East 2nd Street. Construction teams are expected to continue below-grade work throughout the coming months, paving the way for the superstructure to emerge in early 2025, transforming the cityscape at this East Village corner.

The property benefits from its proximity to public transportation, being just a short walk from the 2nd Avenue station serving the F train on Houston Street, enhancing its appeal for future residents of East 2nd Street.

An official completion date for the building at 88 East 2nd Street has not yet been announced, but further updates on this East Village development are anticipated as construction progresses.
