Main Street Theater (MST), established in 1975, stands as a cornerstone of Houston’s performing arts scene. From its humble beginnings, MST has been dedicated to providing enriching theatrical experiences for Houstonians of all ages, while simultaneously offering a platform for local theater professionals to thrive. The theater prides itself on mirroring the diverse community it serves, particularly evident in its Theater for Youth program, which reflects the city’s vibrant demographic makeup.
Originally founded by Artistic Director Rebecca Greene Udden, Main Street Theater began as a collective of passionate artists operating from Autry House on Main Street. Fueled by critical acclaim and growing audiences, MST relocated to Rice Village in 1981. It was here that the theater cultivated its signature intimate performance style within its 99-seat MainStage, a space now recognized nationally for its quality productions. Currently, Main Street Theater is undergoing a significant renovation to enhance its facilities, ensuring they match the high caliber of its theatrical performances.
Beyond its MainStage productions, MST is deeply committed to arts education. Through its Education Department, the theater conducts year-round classes and camps across Greater Houston, reaching schools, community centers, and youth residential treatment facilities in Harris County. These programs aim to immerse young people in performing arts experiences that stem from their own creativity and imaginations.
Main Street Theater’s commitment to excellence and community engagement is further underscored by its affiliations. MST is a proud member of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), a national organization for non-profit theaters, and Theatre for Young Audiences/USA. It is also a founding member of Houston Arts Partners, solidifying its role as a key player in the Houston arts landscape. The MainStage operates under an Actors’ Equity Association Small Professional Theater contract, demonstrating its dedication to professional standards. Main Street Theater is also a proud member of the Greater Houston CVB, further cementing its place within the city’s cultural and visitor network.
