Nestled in the charming port city of Manistee, Michigan, on the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan, the Arthur Street Boat Launch and Fishing Pier stands as a beacon of accessibility for all. This thoughtfully designed facility provides seamless access to the diverse waters of Manistee Lake, ensuring everyone can enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities this area has to offer.
The Arthur Street Boat Launch project was made possible through the generous support of the Great Lakes Fishery Trust, which initially funded the construction of a durable, low-maintenance composite decking fishing pier. This initial investment paved the way for further development, successfully leveraging a DNR Waterways Grant to incorporate crucial accessibility enhancements. These upgrades include designated handicapped parking spaces, a barrier-free restroom facility, and comprehensive barrier-free improvements to both the parking area and the boat launch itself. Careful planning and substantial retaining walls were implemented to protect the natural flood plains, demonstrating an environmentally conscious approach to development.
The strategic location of the Arthur Street boat launch offers unparalleled access for a wide array of watercraft. From this single point, boaters can explore the expansive inland lake, navigate two distinct river systems, and venture out into the vast expanse of Lake Michigan. Each of these aquatic environments presents its own unique ecosystem and distinct recreational experiences, all readily accessible from Arthur Street. The fishing pier extends this access to anglers of all abilities, opening up the renowned fishery of Manistee Lake to everyone.
The Arthur Street site exemplifies successful collaboration in enhancing outdoor recreational spaces. The restrooms, parking facilities, and fishing pier are the result of a powerful partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the City of Manistee, and the Great Lakes Fisheries Trust. Manistee City and County have demonstrated a strong commitment to universal accessibility, prioritizing the inclusive enjoyment of their abundant water resources for individuals of all abilities.
This dedication to accessibility was nationally recognized when the National Association of Physically Handicapped (N.A.P.H.) held their national conference in Manistee in the summer of 2010. The conference timing perfectly aligned with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Arthur Street Boat Launch, allowing N.A.P.H. members to be among the first to experience and appreciate this exceptional resource – and indeed, to enjoy the fantastic fishing opportunities it provides.
For boaters using the launch, it’s important to be aware of navigational hazards. Remnants from Manistee’s historical lumbering era, such as submerged pilings and slab docks, are present in the water. Therefore, careful attention to navigational markers is advised. Beyond navigation, Arthur Street serves as a welcoming gathering place where people from all walks of life and abilities can connect, share fishing stories, and simply appreciate the scenic beauty of Manistee Lake.
