Vito Schnabel Gallery is thrilled to present a solo exhibition of recent paintings by the acclaimed Jorge Galindo at the Independent Art Fair. This marks the gallery’s debut at this prestigious art event.
Born in Madrid, Spain in 1965, Jorge Galindo has cultivated a significant artistic career spanning over three decades since his formative years in the workshops of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. He is celebrated for his monumental expressionist oil paintings, characterized by an untamed, vigorous brushwork and an inherent dynamism that vividly captures the physical act of creation. Galindo’s spontaneous marks – splashes, sprays, and broad strokes of vibrant hues – underscore his unparalleled mastery as a draftsman of the painted stroke, a brilliant colorist, and a composer of exceptional skill.
Galindo’s floral paintings, produced between 2020 and 2021, represent a further exploration into themes of reproduction, and the interplay between printed and painted floral representations. His raw, visceral paint application breathes new life into the traditional still life genre, propelling the realism reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch flower paintings into the abstract sphere. The flower motif initially surfaced in Galindo’s oeuvre in 2009, drawing inspiration from a floral still life by Henri Fantin-Latour, famously used as the cover art for New Order’s seminal 1983 album, Power, Corruption & Lies. Galindo revisited the floral theme in 2019 through a collaboration with renowned Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar. Merging painting, photography, and collage, they enlarged Almodóvar’s still life photographs to serve as the foundation for new paintings. This collaborative process involved both artists applying paint with brushes, hands, and even feet. This ongoing artistic journey is evident in his most recent series of works.
Galindo’s art has been showcased in prominent international institutions, including the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C., the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Hammer Museum of Art in Los Angeles, CA, and The Hall Art Foundation Schloss Derneberg in Germany.
Currently, Galindo resides and works in Toledo, Spain.
