Broad Street Run Results: Ethiopian Runners Dominate the 2024 Race

Philadelphia witnessed a spectacular 36th annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run, with nearly 36,000 participants crossing the finish line in ideal weather conditions. The nation’s largest 10-mile race, sponsored by Independence Blue Cross, saw impressive performances across the board, but it was Ethiopian runners who stole the show in the men’s and women’s divisions.

Men’s Broad Street Run Results

Haile Mengesha of Ethiopia emerged victorious in the men’s division, clocking in an impressive time of 47:53:58. Mengesha’s speed and endurance secured him the top spot, earning him a $3,000 prize and a place on the prestigious Independence Cup. The Independence Cup, a silver trophy, commemorates past champions of this renowned race.

Following closely behind Mengesha were Jaouad El Jazouli, securing second place with a time of 48:38:28, and Diriba Degefa, finishing third at 48:57:51. El Jazouli and Degefa also delivered outstanding performances, adding to the competitive atmosphere of the men’s race.

Thomas Young of Fort Lee, N.J., was the first American male finisher, achieving a time of 50:22:03. Young’s accomplishment highlights American talent in the race, earning him a $500 prize and recognition as the top U.S. male runner.

Women’s Broad Street Run Results

In the women’s division, Tagist Jabore, also from Ethiopia, claimed first place with a time of 53:34:35. Jabore’s victory mirrored Mengesha’s, underscoring Ethiopian runners’ dominance in this year’s Broad Street Run. She too received a $3,000 prize and her name will be inscribed on the Independence Cup.

Askale Merachi secured second place in the women’s division with a time of 53:39:77, and Meseret Taye finished third at 54:46:97. These top finishers showcased remarkable athleticism and contributed to the excitement of the women’s race.

Esther Erb, an assistant track coach at Rider University, was the first American female finisher, completing the race in 55:56:78. Erb’s achievement as the top American woman runner earned her a $500 prize, celebrating local and national running talent.

Wheelchair Race Results

Tony Nogueira, of Glen Ridge, N.J., took first place in the men’s wheelchair race with a time of 38:01:66. Chelsea Crystzer was the first-place female finisher in the wheelchair division, with a time of 51:32:41. Their victories are a testament to the inclusivity and broad appeal of the Broad Street Run.
