My little Josie was completely captivated by Sesame Street when I began planning her 3rd birthday party, and I was so excited to bring the beloved characters and vibrant energy of Sesame Street to life for her special day.

When planning a character-themed birthday party, I always draw inspiration from colors and subtle details. I often prefer to move away from overtly commercialized party decorations and opt for something more refined and reflected in the details. You’ll notice elements like Ernie’s bathtub and rubber ducky as our signature drink station, a Cookie Monster-inspired chocolate chip cookie cake, and adorable googly-eyed party favors, perfect for kids to create their own finger puppets.

The party decor was emphasized with a playful mix of vibrant colors, geometric shapes, letters, and numbers, all reminiscent of the iconic Sesame Street set.
DIY Sesame Street Character Pom Poms
Since Josie adores so many of the lovable Sesame Street characters, I was inspired to make them a central focus of the party decor. I used a fantastic idea I found on Pinterest for Sesame Street tissue paper pom pom characters. These pom pom character faces quickly became my absolute favorite decorative element of the entire party!

I printed character faces (this entire set is incredibly affordable at under $5!) and printed the png files on 110 lb heavyweight cardstock at Staples. The set also includes svg files if you use a Cricut machine. After cutting out the pieces, I used floral wire to attach a character face to each tissue paper pom pom.
I absolutely adore how they turned out, and they were truly the most perfect addition to the vibrant and colorful balloon garland.

Speaking of Staples, I also had the large personalized Sesame Street Birthday banner printed there – and guess what? It cost less than $10! I decided to skip expensive posters and banners and try printing an engineer print – or blueprint print. I had heard about people using them to create large-scale, budget-friendly prints for decorations, so I hoped it would work!
I used Photoshop (Canva is another great option) to add Josie’s name to the design and exported it as a png file. I selected the blueprint option to create a 24×36″ print. Considering the price, I wasn’t expecting top-tier quality, but I was genuinely pleased with the result! The colors were vibrant, and the lines were crisp. The only minor issue I noticed was that the solid green background wasn’t perfectly even in color distribution. Overall, it was ideal for a quick, low-cost, DIY personalized birthday sign that would only be needed for a few hours.
I carefully cut out the green sign and hung it on the wall using gaffer’s tape for easy removal.

Create a playlist filled with upbeat, kid-friendly tunes from Sesame Street, such as “Elmo’s Song,” “The Alphabet Song,” or “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” An Elmo dance party is a guaranteed way to get the party started and get everyone moving!

Let the little ones unleash their inner Cookie Monsters at a fun cookie decorating station! Provide pre-baked sugar cookies in various shapes, along with a colorful array of icing and sprinkles (these ABC sprinkles are absolutely perfect!). They’ll have a blast customizing their cookies, and it’s also a wonderful opportunity to practice fine motor skills in a delicious way.
Oscar’s Grouchy Trash Toss Game
Set up a playful game inspired by Oscar the Grouch’s peculiar fondness for trash. Use small bins or baskets from a dollar store and have the children toss crumpled newspaper into them. Assign different point values to each bin to add a competitive element and let the kids take turns tossing their “trash.”
Sesame Street Sensory Exploration Station
For smaller party groups, consider setting up a captivating sensory station. Fill containers with a variety of textures and materials for the little ones to explore; include cups and spoons for scooping, pouring, and tactile discovery. Add small Sesame Street characters to encourage imaginative play within the sensory bins. Set out homemade colorful play-dough for kids to mold and create their own characters and shapes.
