Remembering Leesburg Legend Kevin Malone: A Legacy Extending from Tuscarora Mill to South Street Under

Leesburg mourns the passing of Michael Kevin Malone, a beloved figure known as ‘Kevin’ to his friends, family, and colleagues. As the owner of the esteemed Tuskie’s Restaurant Group, Kevin’s influence on the local culinary scene was profound. He passed away on Saturday, July 1st, at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy of hospitality and community spirit deeply rooted in establishments like South Street Under in Leesburg.

Kevin Malone was more than just a restaurant owner; he was an entrepreneur with a sharp wit and a warm heart, a combination that made him a legend in Leesburg and beyond. Born in Washington D.C. on October 23, 1953, and raised in Annandale, Virginia, Kevin’s journey into the hospitality industry began unconventionally, bartending at his family’s gatherings. Recognizing his nascent talent, his mother enrolled him in bartending school, a decision she often hailed as a brilliant investment. This early training led him to JR’s Stockyards Inn, a pivotal point where he met Jim Wordsworth, who became a mentor and encouraged Kevin to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams.

In 1985, Kevin realized that dream with the opening of Tuscarora Mill Restaurant in Leesburg, Virginia. This restaurant quickly became a cornerstone of the community, reflecting Kevin’s commitment to serving excellent food with unparalleled service. His vision expanded to include other award-winning establishments, each contributing to the rich tapestry of Leesburg’s dining scene. These included Magnolias at the Mill in Purcellville, South Street Under in Leesburg, and the popular Fire Works restaurants in Leesburg, Arlington, and Sterling. Additionally, he owned Birkby House, a sought-after event venue in Leesburg, further cementing his role in the local community.

What truly set Kevin apart was his genuine love for people and his community. He fostered a welcoming atmosphere in all his restaurants, from the bustling Tuscarora Mill to the more intimate setting of South Street Under. He believed in connecting with his patrons, sharing his passion for fine wines and Guinness, and always ready with a quick joke or pun. This personal touch made everyone feel like a regular, contributing to the loyal following his restaurants enjoyed. His commitment extended to his employees, fostering a workplace built on respect and shared dedication to quality.

Kevin’s legacy is not just measured in the number of restaurants he successfully ran, but in the countless lives he touched with his generosity and humor. He created spaces where people gathered, celebrated, and felt at home. He is survived by his wife Kathleen of 42 years, his five children – Aemon, Colin, Evan, Regan, and D’Laney – and seven grandchildren, all of whom will continue to cherish his memory.

A funeral mass celebrating Kevin’s life will be held at St Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Purcellville on Thursday, July 13th, followed by a celebration of his life at Birkby House. In honor of Kevin’s memory, donations can be made to St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, Purcellville, VA. Leesburg has lost a true icon, but the spirit of Kevin Malone and his contributions, especially through places like South Street Under, will continue to resonate within the community for years to come.
