Construction is visibly progressing on San Pedro Street in Downtown Los Angeles, where a new affordable housing development is taking shape. The concrete framework of the 600 San Pedro project, a collaboration between Related California and the Weingart Center Association, has been erected over the past seven months, signaling a significant step towards completion.
Located at the southeast corner of 6th and San Pedro Streets, the development occupies the site of a former parking lot. The plans for 600 San Pedro detail a 17-story building set to house 302 residential units. A substantial majority, 298 of these, will be dedicated as permanent supportive housing, addressing a critical need in the city. The project also incorporates 2,800 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor and a separate parking structure capable of holding 212 vehicles.
Designed by Large Architecture, the contemporary high-rise at 600 San Pedro Street will feature a range of resident amenities. Notably, an expansive amenity deck is planned above the parking structure, offering residents a courtyard, an amphitheater, and a community garden. The development will also include essential facilities such as laundry rooms, a library, and a fitness center, enhancing the quality of life for its future residents. The anticipated completion date for 600 San Pedro is mid-2025.
This project represents the second of three planned towers by the Weingart Center at the intersection of 6th Street and San Pedro Street. The first tower, a 19-story building nearing completion adjacent to Weingart’s headquarters, is part of a larger initiative to expand supportive housing options in the Downtown area. A third, smaller 12-story building is also planned, which will add over 100 additional supportive housing units. Collectively, these three projects are expected to deliver nearly 700 new homes to the area upon completion, significantly increasing housing availability near San Pedro Street.
Weingart and Related are also collaborating on another affordable housing project in Downtown LA, named the Alveare apartments. This proposed 335-unit complex is planned for the former site of state offices located at 1405 S. Broadway, further demonstrating their commitment to addressing affordable housing needs in Los Angeles.
