The Department of Public Works (DPW) has officially announced the successful completion of vital infrastructure repairs along Poydras Street, a key artery in New Orleans. This significant project, known as the DPW716 Right of Way (ROW) Project, addressed critical improvements from S. Claiborne Avenue to Convention Center Boulevard, ensuring enhanced safety and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. Hard Rock Construction, LLC, undertook the work, commencing in May 2024 and concluding in December 2024, marking a substantial upgrade to this important thoroughfare.
The comprehensive project encompassed a range of essential upgrades. Poydras Street has been entirely resurfaced, providing a smoother and safer driving experience. Roadway repaving was carried out to strengthen the street’s structure, while sidewalk replacements ensure pedestrian safety and improved walkability. Crucially, the project included the installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps at intersections, making Poydras Street more accessible for individuals with disabilities.

Scope of Poydras Street Improvements
The renovations on Poydras Street were strategically divided into two key sections to minimize disruption and maximize efficiency:
- S. Claiborne Ave. to S. Liberty St: This section focused on essential repairs and resurfacing to improve the existing infrastructure.
- Loyola Ave. to Convention Center Blvd: Beyond general repairs, this segment saw the addition of new bike lanes in both directions. These dedicated bike lanes significantly enhance cycling infrastructure in the city center, promoting alternative transportation and connectivity. Furthermore, a riverbound bike lane was also added between S. Liberty and Loyola, further expanding the network.
These improvements are part of a broader DPW716 ROW Improvement Project that extends beyond Poydras Street, enhancing infrastructure across several key locations in the city, including:
- Poydras Street (S. Claiborne Ave. – S. Liberty St.)
- Poydras Street (Loyola Ave. – Convention Center Blvd.)
- Julia Street (Convention Center Blvd. – Loyola Ave.)
- Julia Street and Howard Ave. Extensions
- Girod Street (Loyola Ave. – S. Liberty St.)
Throughout the project duration, the DPW prioritized minimizing inconvenience to the community. Local access was consistently maintained for residents, businesses receiving deliveries, and emergency services, ensuring the city continued to function smoothly. Safety remained paramount, with comprehensive traffic control measures, clear signage, and protective barriers implemented to safeguard both pedestrians and drivers navigating Poydras Street and the surrounding areas.
The successful completion of the Poydras Street infrastructure repairs represents a significant step forward in enhancing the city’s infrastructure. These upgrades promise to improve safety for all road users, enhance accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, and boost overall mobility along these vital corridors for years to come. The DPW expresses its gratitude for the community’s patience and cooperation throughout this essential project.
