Revamped 147th Street/Sibley Boulevard Metra Station Welcomes Commuters After Major Upgrade

The 147th Street/Sibley Boulevard Station on the Metra Electric Line in Harvey is set to reopen on Monday, October 28th, marking the completion of an extensive two-year reconstruction project. This significant upgrade promises a vastly improved experience for passengers utilizing the 147th street station.

Commuters returning to the 147th Street Metra station will discover a completely modernized facility. A key feature of the renovation is the installation of a new elevator, ensuring full accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The improvements extend beyond accessibility, encompassing street-level enhancements like a newly constructed covered staircase, a convenient kiss & ride drop-off lane, dedicated bicycle parking, and redesigned pedestrian pathways for smoother transitions. At the track level, passengers will benefit from a brand-new platform sheltered by a canopy and enclosed warming shelters, offering protection from inclement weather while waiting for their trains at 147th street.

This project represents the first major overhaul of the 147th Street station in nearly three decades. IHC Construction Companies LLC, based in Elgin, effectively managed the $20.8 million undertaking. Funding for this vital infrastructure project was secured through a combination of sources, including the State of Illinois’ Rebuild Illinois program, the Federal Transit Administration, and a Cook County Invest in Cook grant. Notably, IHC Construction demonstrated a commitment to local economic development by subcontracting 25% of the project work to minority and women-owned businesses.

“Access to efficient public transportation is crucial for a thriving community, and this renovated, universally accessible station at 147th Street serves as an inviting gateway to Harvey,” stated Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski. He further emphasized Metra’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the commuter experience, “Metra’s investment at 147th Street and our continuous efforts to upgrade stations throughout the Metra Electric Line and our entire network are aimed at making our services more appealing and user-friendly.”

To officially celebrate the reopening, Metra will host a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 147th Street/Sibley Station on Tuesday, October 29th, at 10 a.m., with the participation of elected officials. Furthermore, Metra, with support from the RTA, is organizing a special “Metra Harvest Fest” for the Harvey community. This free event will take place in the station’s parking lot on Saturday, November 2nd, from noon to 3 p.m. The Harvest Fest promises an afternoon of entertainment with music, games, activities, food trucks, and giveaways. Metra expresses gratitude to the Harvey community for their patience during the station closure and encourages residents to attend the events, explore the upgraded 147th Street station, and embrace the improved facilities.
