Philadelphia’s iconic William H. Gray III 30th Street Station, a vital transportation hub, is embarking on a new chapter. A major renovation project has officially commenced, marking the beginning of an exciting era for passenger rail in Philadelphia. Amtrak, alongside federal, state, and local officials, as well as community leaders, gathered to celebrate the construction kickoff, signaling a significant investment in the future of this historic landmark and its surrounding district.
This ambitious project is the first phase of a comprehensive vision developed in 2016 through a partnership between Amtrak, Brandywine Realty Trust, Drexel University, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). The overarching goal is to modernize and enhance the 30th Street Philadelphia Train Station, ensuring it continues to serve as a world-class gateway to the city and region for generations to come.
Enhancing the 30th Street Station Experience
The large-scale restoration and renovation project promises to revitalize the station’s functionality and significantly improve the overall customer experience for passengers utilizing Amtrak, SEPTA, and NJ TRANSIT. While preserving the architectural grandeur of this Philadelphia landmark, the renovations will introduce a host of modern amenities and upgrades.
“This large-scale restoration and renovation project will enhance the station’s functionality and improve the customer experience for Amtrak, SEPTA and NJ TRANSIT customers, while preserving this iconic Philadelphia landmark for future generations,” stated Amtrak Executive Vice President, Business Transformation and Chief Financial Officer, Tracie Winbigler. “Additionally, this station transformation will improve Market Street Plaza, expand retail offerings and provide other benefits to the local community.”
Amtrak has partnered with Plenary Infrastructure Philadelphia (PIP) as the master developer for this transformative project. Through a public-private partnership (P3) agreement, PIP will oversee the design, build, finance, operation, and maintenance of the station improvements for the next 50 years. Key contractors involved in bringing this vision to life include Gilbane Building Company as the design-build lead, Johnson Controls Inc. for facility operations and maintenance, and Vantage Airport Group for concessions development and management. The capital construction value of the project is estimated at $550 million, encompassing a wide range of enhancements:
Modernized Retail and Dining
Passengers can look forward to a significantly expanded and modernized selection of food & beverage and retail options within the station. This upgrade aims to cater to diverse tastes and needs, providing travelers with a more enjoyable and convenient experience while waiting for their trains or passing through.
Improved Station Operations and Customer Service
The renovation project will focus on streamlining station operations and enhancing customer service. This includes improvements to wayfinding, ticketing areas, and passenger flow, making navigation through the bustling station more intuitive and efficient. The aim is to create a smoother, less stressful travel experience for everyone.
Upgrades to The Porch and Community Amenities
The Porch, a popular public space adjacent to the station, will also receive upgrades to its landscaping and community amenities. These improvements will enhance the appeal of this outdoor area, making it an even more welcoming space for both travelers and the local community to enjoy.
Modernizing Infrastructure
Essential building infrastructure will be modernized to ensure the station remains in a state of good repair for years to come. These behind-the-scenes upgrades are crucial for the long-term functionality and sustainability of the 30th Street Philadelphia train station.

Community Investment and Economic Impact
Beyond the physical improvements to the station, the project includes a significant commitment to the surrounding community. PIP equity sponsor, Plenary Americas, LP, is investing $2.5 million into a community impact fund. This fund is specifically dedicated to supporting career development and small business growth opportunities for women, people of color, and under-represented groups in West Philadelphia and throughout the city.
The initial grants from this fund will be directed towards worker training programs run by the Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council (Samuel Staten Sr. Pre-Apprenticeship Program) and the Finishing Trades Institute of the Mid-Atlantic Region (WINC, Women in Non-traditional Careers). Furthermore, The Enterprise Center will receive support to bolster their efforts in promoting racial and economic equity by providing capital access to small businesses. Additional grants will be distributed to local small business advocates, including prominent organizations such as the African American Chamber of Commerce of PA/DE/NJ, Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia, and the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
This community impact fund underscores the project’s commitment to not only revitalizing a crucial transportation hub but also fostering economic opportunity and inclusivity within the local community.
What Travelers Need to Know During Construction at 30th Street Station
While the extensive renovations are underway, it’s important for travelers to be aware of potential impacts on their journeys. Train operations will continue as normal throughout the construction period. However, passengers are advised to allow extra time to access boarding platforms due to ongoing construction activities and adjustments to pedestrian paths implemented last fall.
Elevator and escalator work commenced in January 2024, and further construction phases will continue through 2027. The station’s South Concourse has been closed for major construction since January 1, 2024, and is anticipated to reopen in Summer 2025. During the South Concourse construction, temporary concession kiosks will be available in the station’s main concourse to supplement existing retail that remains open. Concession locations within the SEPTA concourse and rental car facilities will continue to operate. Current temporary concession kiosks in the main concourse include Dunkin’ Donuts, Hudson News, and Pret A Manger, providing essential services for travelers.
