Enhancing Access to Brickell: Improvements on SW 8th Street and SW 7th Street in Miami

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is undertaking a comprehensive Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study focused on enhancing the vital corridors of State Road 90, encompassing both SW 8th Street and SW 7th Street in the bustling city of Miami. This initiative is geared towards addressing existing challenges related to the physical infrastructure, operational efficiency, and safety along this crucial one-way street pair. A key focus area includes the interchanges connecting these roadways with Interstate 95 (I-95), aiming to create smoother and safer transitions for drivers.

This project is meticulously evaluating the current physical state, operational functionality, and safety aspects within the designated project area. This encompasses a detailed look at the interchanges at SW 8th Street and I-95, as well as SW 7th Street and I-95. The envisioned improvements are designed to significantly enhance traffic flow, bolster safety measures for all users, cultivate a more pedestrian-friendly environment, and crucially, improve accessibility to the vibrant Brickell area. The geographical scope of this study spans along SR 90/SW 8 Street/SW 7 Street, stretching from SW 27 Avenue all the way to SR 5/US 1/Brickell Avenue, ensuring a holistic approach to corridor enhancement.

Central to the success of this project is achieving a strong community consensus among the diverse stakeholders who have a vested interest in the study area. To ensure this collaborative approach, FDOT has developed a robust Public Involvement Plan (PIP) as an integral component of this PD&E Study. The activities outlined in the PIP are structured to actively involve individuals who live and work within the project’s study area, alongside elected and appointed officials, environmental resource agencies, and other relevant stakeholders. This inclusive strategy aims to empower these groups to contribute meaningfully to the decision-making process and directly influence the choices concerning proposed transportation improvements within the project corridor. The overarching goal of the PIP is to foster stakeholder engagement, ensuring a clear understanding of the project’s nature and its intended benefits through open and reciprocal communication. To support this objective, project information will be presented in an easily understandable format, available in both English and Spanish, and readily accessible at public meetings and presentations. Opportunities for public feedback and comment are available through direct communication with project staff via mail, telephone, email, the project website, and active participation in public meetings.

The environmental review, consultation processes, and other actions mandated by applicable federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, diligently carried out by FDOT in accordance with 23 U.S.C. § 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated May 26, 2022, executed by both the FHWA and FDOT. This ensures the project adheres to the highest environmental standards and regulations.
