The Adams Street Library, a recent addition to the Brooklyn Public Library system, stands as a beacon of community engagement and modern design within the historic DUMBO district. This new branch, designed by renowned architecture firm WORKac, marks the first new library to open in Brooklyn in over two decades, responding directly to the needs of the diverse neighborhoods it serves, including DUMBO, Vinegar Hill, and Farragut Houses.
The library’s inception was deeply rooted in community feedback. Extensive outreach revealed a significant demand for dedicated children’s spaces and programming. WORKac thoughtfully placed children at the heart of their design, creating vibrant areas specifically for learning, story time, reading, and exploration. These spaces are not only functional but also visually stimulating, offering captivating views of Brooklyn Bridge Park, connecting young minds to the cityscape and nature simultaneously. Beyond its focus on youth, the Adams Street Library also provides dedicated zones and resources for teens and young adults, ensuring it caters to all age groups within the community.

The interior of Adams Street Library is designed to be flexible and adaptable, featuring two large multipurpose rooms. These spaces are equipped with stackable chairs, foldable tables, whiteboards, and even a kitchenette, making them ideal for community gatherings, meetings, and a variety of programs. Recognizing the importance of technology in modern life, the library offers free Wi-Fi throughout, along with integrated charging and power outlets at reading tables, and advanced projection capabilities in the community room. Accessibility is also a key consideration, with gender-inclusive restrooms and generous spaces for both staff and the public.
Located beneath the iconic Manhattan Bridge within a renovated 1901 industrial building in the DUMBO Historic District, the Adams Street Library beautifully marries historical elements with contemporary design. The building itself has a rich history, having served as a torpedo factory and a recycling facility before its current transformation. WORKac embraced this layered past, exposing the original heavy timber ceiling and patinaed brick perimeter walls, creating a dialogue between the old and the new. This historical texture is further enhanced by pixelated murals depicting nature scenes inspired by the surrounding neighborhood, adding a touch of modern artistry to the space.

The library’s design emphasizes open, airy spaces, surrounded by expansive 15-foot windows that flood the interior with natural light. A central feature is a porous pavilion, clad in maple-veneered MDF with custom CNC-milled patterns. This pavilion houses the elevated children’s area, allowing children to enjoy panoramic views. The pavilion’s design cleverly integrates functional niches for stroller parking and book storage with inviting, curved openings. The use of cheerful orange hues in the children’s area, along with a dedicated story time space and playful steps, further enhances the welcoming atmosphere.

Externally, the Adams Street Library makes a bold statement with a super-graphic “LIBRARY” sign at its entrance. This sign, approved by the Landmarks Commission, is a creative nod to the historic painted signs prevalent in the neighborhood. Visible from across the East River, this signage acts as a clear invitation, establishing the library as a vital and identifiable public amenity within DUMBO. The Adams Street Library is more than just a place for books; it’s a thoughtfully designed community space that honors its location’s history while embracing modern needs and serving as a vibrant hub for learning and connection in Brooklyn.
