From Dive Bar Illusion to Music Venue Revelation

My first encounter with Alberta Street Pub came after dinner on Alberta Street. A friend casually suggested, “Wanna go into this dive bar?” Intrigued, I agreed, only to quickly realize upon entering and glancing at their impressive bourbon selection, that “dive bar” was a serious mischaracterization. It was during a return visit for a live music performance that the true nature of Alberta Street Pub fully revealed itself. On a street with several “Alberta” named establishments, this one stands out as a thoughtfully designed, intimate venue that defies initial expectations.

A Transformation Rooted in Music and Community

The pub’s story is as interesting as the venue itself. Originally known as The Love Train, remnants of its disco-pink past still linger in the back. Later, under the ownership of Mikey Beglan, hailing from Ireland, it transitioned into an Irish-style pub, taking on the name Alberta Street Pub. The real turning point came when Beglan considered selling to Django Amerson, an Irish fiddle player from a family of artists and musicians who also happened to be experienced in home renovation. In late 2012, the Amerson siblings embarked on a nine-month remodel, collaborating with fellow musicians to meticulously refine the performance space’s acoustics.

Key changes included relocating the stage and implementing extensive sound treatments throughout the pub. The stylish striped wall panels aren’t just for aesthetics; they are quadratic diffusers, strategically placed to enhance acoustics. Alberta Street Pub also partnered with Ear Trumpet Labs, a local Portland company specializing in high-quality condenser microphones, ensuring exceptional sound for performers and audiences alike. According to booker Chris Andersen, the goal was to create an exceptional space for musicians, hosting a diverse range of acts from rock and bluegrass to Americana and singer-songwriters, even including comedy nights like “Control Yourself.” With a cozy capacity of around 100 standing guests, the venue fosters an intimate atmosphere for live performances. While residential noise ordinances necessitate some earlier, all-ages shows, this only adds to the pub’s unique character and community focus.

Modern Touches and Familial Charm

Today, Laina Amerson and her partner Robert Bouchard are at the helm, continuing to elevate the Alberta Street Pub experience. They’ve completely revamped the decor, with musicians contributing to rebuilding the bar itself, updated the lighting, and crafted a new menu. The addition of a spacious, heated patio in the cleared-out back lot has further expanded the pub’s appeal. Despite these modern updates, Alberta Street Pub retains a warm, familial ambiance and subtle nods to its Irish pub heritage. The pub boasts an impressive whiskey selection, alongside house-made ginger beer and a from-scratch kitchen that features comforting dishes like Shepherd’s pie in the winter. This dedication to detail and craftsmanship is evident in every aspect, from the food and drinks to the performance venue itself. Laina Amerson mentioned their intention to step out of the shadows and invite more people to experience the great food, drinks, and live music that Alberta Street Pub has to offer.

In conclusion, Alberta Street Pub is more than just a pub; it’s a testament to Portland’s vibrant music scene and community spirit. It’s a place where you can enjoy craft cocktails, delicious food, and exceptional live music in an intimate and welcoming setting. If you’re looking for an authentic Portland experience, make sure to discover the hidden gem that is Alberta Street Pub.
