Named after Juan Bautista Alvarado, a former governor of Alta California, this pivotal street is the gateway to significant historical landmarks. Adjacent to Alvarado Street, you’ll find Colton Hall, the Larkin House, the Cooper Molera Adobe, the Stevenson House, the Custom House, and California’s First Theater. These landmarks, among others, are readily accessible for tours, many of which are free, and are also featured on the self-guided Path of History, marked by distinctive yellow tiles embedded in the sidewalks throughout downtown.
Old Monterey, centered around Alvarado Street, acts as the historical core of downtown. Serving both residents and tourists, it provides access to the well-marked Path of History and over 400 businesses including shops, restaurants, hotels, and various professional services.
Alvarado Street is also the location for the lively Old Monterey Marketplace, a weekly event held every Tuesday, rain or shine. Operating from 4pm to 7pm between October and April, and extending to 8pm from May to September, this Certified Farmer’s Market brims with enticing baked goods, fresh organic produce, and unique arts and crafts from numerous vendors.
The Old Monterey Business Association (OMBA), a non-profit organization, plays a crucial role in enhancing the economic vitality and community spirit of Old Monterey. As a certified member of the National Main Street program since 1992, OMBA offers valuable resources such as an online dining guide and a downtown event calendar. The association also organizes and supports community events like the 4th of July Parade and the Tree Lighting ceremony at Colton Hall Lawn, fostering a sense of community and celebrating Monterey’s rich heritage and promising future.
