Apple Store on Walnut Street, Shadyside: Relocating to Former Gap Store

The Apple Store in Shadyside is set to move to a new location, just a short distance from its current spot on Walnut Street. Customers will find the store in the 5400 block of Walnut Street, taking over the space previously occupied by the Gap. This relocation means the Apple Store On Walnut Street is merely moving down the street from its existing location in the 5500 block.

This change comes amidst a period of evolution for Walnut Street’s retail landscape. The Gap’s closure was part of a broader nationwide trend, reflecting a shift in consumer demand towards online shopping. Announced earlier in the year, the Gap closure was one of many, as its parent company revealed plans to shutter approximately 350 Gap and Banana Republic stores across North America by the end of 2023. According to local chamber Co-President, John Henne, these closures are not unique to Walnut Street but are occurring across the country.

However, Walnut Street is also welcoming new businesses. Amazing Books and Records, a beloved local bookstore, recently moved to Shadyside from downtown Pittsburgh, opening its doors in April. They are now located at 5430 Walnut Street, in the former Athleta space. In a Facebook post, Amazing Books and Records expressed their excitement about the move, highlighting their larger space which is “three times the size” of their previous downtown store and features “great wood details.”

While an exact date for the Apple Store on Walnut Street move has not been publicly announced, the relocation is anticipated to be a significant development for the Shadyside shopping district. The move of the Apple store on Walnut Street signifies an exciting change for both the store and the local retail environment.
