Led by Doug Apple, a NAUI Instructor and the Aquarium of the Bay’s Manager of Education and Outreach, alongside Chris Grace, a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and the Aquarium’s Dive Safety Officer, this course offers an unparalleled learning experience. Begin your academic journey from the comfort of your home and then join us for in-water sessions.

Earn NAUI Specialty Certifications:

Upon completion of the course, divers will earn two valuable NAUI Specialty Certifications, boosting your diving credentials and knowledge:

  • NAUI Underwater Naturalist: Develop your understanding of marine ecosystems through three engaging dives.
  • NAUI Kelp Restoration Diver: Learn about the vital role of kelp forests and participate in restoration efforts over two dives.
  • Fun Dive with a Pro: Enjoy an additional dive led by a NAUI Dive Professional, exploring the underwater wonders of the Bay Area.

Beyond certifications, this course provides unique insights into the diverse aquatic wildlife of the San Francisco Bay Area, thanks to our expert team at Aquarium of the Bay. A highlight of the program is the extraordinary opportunity to dive in our 370,000-gallon Nearshore Tunnel exhibit. Immerse yourself among thousands of fish, including impressive giant sea bass, vibrant garibaldi, and a variety of rockfish and perch species – a truly unforgettable encounter.

For divers seeking more involvement at the Aquarium of the Bay, our volunteer diver team offers a rewarding weekly commitment. Contribute to the care of nearly 20,000 marine animals by assisting with underwater exhibit maintenance. Tasks include vacuuming, scrubbing, diet preparation, and targeted feeding – all while diving in our stunning aquarium environments.

Important Note: Please remember that a California Sport Fishing License is required to participate in this course.
