The iconic Guadalupe Street in Austin, Texas, known affectionately as “The Drag,” has a bold new landmark: massive, forty-foot-tall “T-E-X-A-S” letters. These burnt orange and white trimmed letters now stretch across the heart of Guadalupe Street, marking a significant enhancement to the University of Texas campus experience. This installation is part of the University’s ongoing commitment to enrich campus life for its 53,000 students and visitors alike.
Positioned strategically on Guadalupe Street, these striking letters are located between the University of Texas’ West Mall and the bustling retail area that includes the University Co-op. This prime location on Austin Texas Guadalupe Street ensures maximum visibility, especially during peak visitation times for prospective and newly admitted students touring the campus. The timing is also significant as it precedes the University’s grand Southeastern Conference (SEC) welcome celebration on June 30th.
University of Texas President Jay Hartzell emphasized the importance of Guadalupe Street, stating, “Guadalupe Street, or the Drag as we affectionately know it, is our symbolic front lawn that tens of thousands of students, faculty, staff and visitors cross every day… How they experience our campus contributes to their pride and spirit and is important to their sense of place.” He added, “I can’t think of a better time to show our tremendous spirit on the street than during a time when thousands of prospective students come for tours… and as we prepare for a Texas-sized party marking our entry to the Southeastern Conference.”
The project was a collaborative effort, with the City of Austin working closely with the University of Texas to ensure all permits were secured and the installation was completed promptly. To celebrate the Longhorns officially joining the SEC on July 1st, UT and Texas Athletics are hosting a free, all-day public celebration on Sunday, June 30th. This event promises a vibrant atmosphere with live music, spectacular fireworks, interactive games, photo opportunities with the beloved mascot Bevo, and a diverse selection of food trucks. The SEC Network will also be broadcasting live from the celebration. Furthermore, attendees can enjoy complimentary activities offered by University institutions such as the LBJ Presidential Library, the Texas Science & Natural History Museum, and the Blanton Museum of Art, making it a true showcase of the University’s offerings.
The installation of the “TEXAS” letters on Austin Texas Guadalupe Street not only enhances the visual appeal of this iconic area but also serves as a powerful symbol of University pride and an exciting welcome to the Southeastern Conference era. This vibrant addition to Guadalupe Street is set to become a must-see landmark for students, visitors, and the Austin community.
