Beacon Street Enhancements: Safer Intersections, New Bike Lanes, and Improved Accessibility

Beacon Street is set to undergo significant improvements aimed at enhancing safety and predictability for all road users. These changes, focused on the Beacon/Berkeley intersection and surrounding areas, are designed to address unsafe driver behavior, improve infrastructure, and create a more connected and accessible streetscape.

One of the primary focuses is on creating safer, more predictable driver behavior at the Beacon/Berkeley intersection. The redesign will streamline traffic flow by designating the right lane on Beacon Street for both through traffic and right turns. This modification is intended to deter illegal right turns on red, a common source of accidents. Furthermore, the traffic signal phasing will be simplified, with all vehicles on Beacon Street proceeding simultaneously. The removal of separate phases for through and right turns will create a more intuitive and less confusing intersection for drivers.

Recognizing the importance of parking for the local community, the project will preserve parking on both sides of Beacon Street between Mugar Way and Berkeley Street, as well as on the east side of Berkeley Street north of Commonwealth Avenue. Metered parking on the north side of Beacon Street will remain unchanged. This commitment to maintaining parking reflects valuable feedback received from residents and institutional stakeholders during the project’s consultation phase.

Finally, keeping traffic moving safely is a crucial objective. To achieve a balance between safety improvements and parking preservation, Beacon Street will be reconfigured to have two lanes instead of three between Mugar Way and Berkeley Street. This decision was informed by standard traffic modeling practices. While traffic queues may experience slight increases during peak hours, the overall impact on traffic delay is anticipated to be minimal for the majority of the day. Traffic signal timings will be adjusted to optimize traffic flow and mitigate potential congestion. The overarching approach is to enhance safety on Beacon Street at all times while ensuring peak hour traffic queues remain within an acceptable range.
