Philadelphia witnessed a vibrant display of athleticism and community spirit as 40,000 runners participated in the 45th annual Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run. The Broad Street Run 2024 marked a triumphant return to pre-pandemic participation levels and celebrated new course records, solidifying its status as a premier 10-mile road race. Organized by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) in partnership with Independence Blue Cross (IBX), the headline sponsor for 28 years, the race was broadcast live on NBC10 and Telemundo62, bringing the excitement to a wider audience.
This year’s broad street run 2024 was particularly significant as it reached its maximum capacity of 40,000 participants for the first time since the pandemic. Adding to the inclusive nature of the event, the race featured an awards category for non-binary finishers for the second year, with Winter Parts setting a new course record in the non-binary division. Another welcome return was the finish line’s relocation to the historic Navy Yard, bringing back a traditional element of the broad street run 2024 after three years of construction-related adjustments.
The starting horn for the broad street run 2024 sounded at 7:30 a.m. at Broad Street and Fisher Avenue, with Independence Blue Cross CEO Gregory E. Deavens and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Susan Slawson present to officially commence the race.
“Independence Blue Cross is proud to have supported this race for 28 years. It has always represented our commitment to preventive health and fitness, one of our core values,” stated Gregory E. Deavens, IBX President and CEO, highlighting the long-standing partnership and shared values behind the broad street run 2024.
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Susan Slawson also expressed her enthusiasm: “I was thrilled to celebrate the return of 40,000 runners to Broad Street for Philadelphia’s iconic road race. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who made it possible, and congratulations to all of our 2024 runners!” Commissioner Slawson was present at the finish line to congratulate the winners of the broad street run 2024.
