Andy Warhol’s NYC Social Scene Celebrated at Dover Street Market New York

Dover Street Market New York is currently hosting a unique exhibition, Andy Warhol: Social Disease, that delves into the vibrant and diverse social circles of New York City that Andy Warhol actively participated in. This exhibition perfectly encapsulates the energetic spirit that continues to flourish within the creative community fostered by DSMNY itself.

The exhibition features Warhol’s original photographic prints capturing iconic NYC figures such as Fab 5 Freddy, Debbie Harry, and Joey Arias. These intimate portraits, alongside original hand-screened t-shirts from the same era, offer a glimpse into Warhol’s personal interactions and the dynamic cultural landscape he navigated. The selected artworks vividly illustrate the energy of social encounters, demonstrating the enduring relevance of Warhol’s legacy within today’s vital communities and cultural movements.

A significant aspect of this exhibition is its charitable purpose. Proceeds from the sale of these featured pieces will directly benefit the Andy Warhol Foundation’s endowment. This foundation plays a crucial role in the art world, distributing approximately $18 million annually in grants to support the advancement of visual arts. Michael Dayton Hermann, Director of Licensing, Marketing and Sales at The Andy Warhol Foundation, highlights this connection, emphasizing the exhibition’s support for the arts community.

Running from November 19th to December 2nd, the Social Disease exhibition at Dover Street Market New York provides an immersive experience for visitors, allowing them to step into the lively social world that Warhol inhabited.

Beyond Warhol’s artworks, the exhibition also presents exclusive, limited-edition products. Among these are meticulously crafted replicas of Andy Warhol’s screen-printed Converse sneakers. In the 1980s, Warhol transformed his own Converse Chucks into personalized canvases, adorning them with hand-screened graphics inspired by his artistic explorations of that period. These replicas not only pay homage to his pioneering spirit but also underscore Converse’s enduring presence within art subculture, a fitting tribute to New York’s vibrant creative energy.

Adding to the exclusivity, Piaget is showcasing its ‘Andy Warhol Watch.’ Originally launched in 1972 and known then as the ‘Black Tie’, this timepiece quickly became synonymous with Warhol. He acquired his own in 1973 and became a prominent member of the Piaget Society. Piaget’s collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation to rename the watch in Warhol’s honor this year further cements this connection, highlighting the enduring relationship between the artist and the luxury Maison.
