I indulged in their renowned cinnamon roll and a “Small” Greek salad – both were absolutely delightful. The cinnamon roll was a masterpiece of gooey sweetness, clearly made with real butter, a true signature bakery item. The Greek salad, even in its “small” size, was generously portioned and fresh. My mother opted for a blueberry scone and loaded hashbrowns and declared she couldn’t wait to return.

The service we received was exceptional. Our server, Michaela Bowlby, was incredibly attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. We learned that Michaela is also a registered nurse at Olympic Medical Center, our local hospital, and has been working at The Haven for years. It’s a testament to the warm and welcoming environment that employees like Michaela return.

Talking with Michaela, I discovered some fascinating history about First Street Haven. It turns out the current owner, Mr. Mike French, is deeply connected to this restaurant and the local culinary scene.

Mike’s journey with The Haven began years ago when he worked for both Chestnut Cottage and First Street Haven when they were under the same ownership. His dedication and versatility made him an invaluable employee, trained in every aspect of the restaurants’ operations. After pursuing a music degree in college and returning to Port Angeles, fate intervened. The owners were looking to retire and sell The Haven, but they wanted to ensure it was in good hands. They offered it to Mike, recognizing his passion and commitment.
Mike embraced the opportunity, and since 2008, he has been the proud owner of First Street Haven. Despite its cozy size, it consistently ranks as one of the top-rated restaurants in Port Angeles. When he’s there, which is most days of the week, Mike is also the main chef, ensuring the quality and consistency of the menu.
Mr. French is a strong advocate for the “locavore” philosophy. He prioritizes sourcing ingredients locally whenever possible, including seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as meats. Even the delicious baked goods are made in-house, adding to the authentic and fresh experience.
