Discovering Peace of Mind: My Journey to Franklin Street Apartments

Moving to Franklin Street Apartments was a decision driven by family and a need for a more secure living environment. For ten years, I enjoyed my second-floor apartment in a converted house. It was a comfortable space where I cultivated flowers, grilled outdoors, and had a picnic table. However, as time passed and my downstairs neighbor moved to a nursing home, my children began to express concerns about my safety living alone. Despite my own feelings of security, their worries were valid and prompted them to start looking for a new home for me.

My daughter, always proactive, discovered Franklin Street Apartments through a newspaper advertisement and believed it would be an ideal fit. She wisely advised me to consider not just my present situation but also my future needs, especially given my arthritis and fibromyalgia. Having worked as a caregiver and nursing assistant, I understood the importance of planning ahead. Following her lead, I interviewed with the manager at Franklin Street Apartments in Ephrata. To my surprise and delight, I was readily accepted. They offered me not one, but two apartment options, citing my caregiving background as a valuable asset to their community. They envisioned me as a spokesperson and helper for the other residents, a role I readily embraced.

The biggest hurdle initially was downsizing. Adjusting to a smaller living space took about six months. Working still provided a welcome distraction and kept me active, but the process of decluttering and letting go of possessions was significant. Despite this adjustment, the convenience of Franklin Street Apartments quickly became apparent. Looking back, I truly believe divine intervention guided me here. Moving here alleviated my children’s anxieties, and as someone who had often advised others on the importance of making timely decisions about independent living, I recognized the wisdom in this move. Franklin Street Apartments offers precisely that – independent living with the freedom to manage my life within a supportive and safe community.

My involvement in the community extends beyond just being a resident. When asked if I would be willing to assist fellow residents, I immediately agreed. I often accompany others to check-ups and am always available to lend a hand. Shortly after moving in, a situation arose where residents were having difficulties with a manager. I attended a community meeting where residents voiced their concerns alongside the manager’s perspective. Eventually, feeling compelled to act as a voice for my fellow residents, I spoke up. Despite my initial fear, I advocated for the residents, a moment that solidified my role within this community.

I often share with others the importance of respect and understanding. We are all unique individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Regardless of our differences, mutual respect is paramount. Janet, our current manager, is exceptional. Her attentiveness and willingness to listen are deeply appreciated by all the residents. We know that when we have a concern, Janet is readily available to address it. I, in turn, am always willing to support her in making her job easier.

Now retired for four years from a job I loved – connecting with and caring for people – at the age of 74, I find contentment at Franklin Street Apartments. Considering my health concerns, living here is a blessing. It’s more than just an apartment; it’s a supportive community that offers peace of mind and a fulfilling chapter in my life.
