Discovering a Gem: A New Look at Gale Street Inn Mundelein

For many Chicagoans, the name Gale Street Inn evokes fond memories of its Jefferson Park location, a beloved spot for classic American fare. Growing up in the city, I always associated Gale Street Inn with that particular restaurant on Milwaukee Avenue. However, as life took me further north, I heard whispers of a second location in Mundelein, often referred to as “Diamond Lake.” While initial feedback was lukewarm, recent buzz suggested significant changes under new ownership. Intrigued, and always on the hunt for a great dining experience, I decided it was time to revisit Gale Street Inn in Mundelein and see for myself.

My dining companions for this venture were Alan and Vicky, seasoned restaurant reviewers and adventurous eaters. As we approached the standalone building of Gale Street Inn Mundelein, the spacious grounds and expansive dining area immediately set a different tone from its city counterpart. The ambiance evoked a classic supper club feel, a detail later confirmed by our host, General Manager Bill Skoufis, who mentioned plans for live entertainment in the future.

Jane, ever discerning about seating, appreciated the thoughtful spacing within the dining room, a welcome consideration in today’s world. The location itself contributes significantly to the experience. Nestled away from the urban hustle and bustle and across from Diamond Lake, Gale Street Inn Mundelein feels like a true escape to “rural America.” The setting allows you to shed the day’s stresses and immerse yourself in a relaxed dining atmosphere from the moment you step inside. While masks are necessary for entry and exit, once seated and ready to delve into the menu, you truly feel transported to a different, more tranquil world.

Our server, Mario, perfectly complemented the laid-back atmosphere. He offered ample time to peruse the extensive menu and daily specials, patiently answering our questions. The wine list was impressive, although as a vodka martini enthusiast, I opted for my usual – expertly prepared despite the lack of signature cocktails.

To begin our culinary exploration, we chose three appetizers: Steamed Mussels, Fried Calamari, and Meatballs with Polenta. The mussels were plump and flavorful, the calamari crisp and tender, and the meatballs with polenta were a delightful and comforting combination. Observing Lamb Lollipops being served at a neighboring table has already secured them a spot on my list for the next visit. For soup, we opted for the Lobster Bisque, chosen over the daily Baked French Onion, based on Mario’s recommendation of the fresh, daily-sourced ingredients. Being a Friday, the seafood bisque felt particularly appropriate and proved to be an excellent choice.

The menu boasts a wide array of salads, and we shared the Roasted Beet Salad, a vibrant mix of red and gold beets with a tangy-sweet house dressing. As a beet aficionado, I can attest to its exceptional quality and found myself reluctant to share – even though the portion was generous.

For our main courses, we sampled a range of Gale Street Inn’s specialties. The Gale Street Prime Rib (queen cut) was slow-roasted to perfection, served with a classic beef au jus and a baked potato. We also indulged in a half slab of their renowned ribs, a house specialty since 1963. It’s clear the new owners understand the importance of tradition, as the ribs were just as exceptional as I had heard, accompanied by creamy mashed potatoes.

The third entree was the Broiled Salmon Piccata with spinach in a delicate lemon beurre blanc sauce – described by my companions as simply “to die for.” The menu reads like a curated collection of tempting dishes, from meat-lover’s favorites to fresh, daily-caught fish. Beyond our selections, Gale Street Inn Mundelein offers an enticing Prime New York Strip, Lamb Chops, and a Surf and Turf option, promising a reason to return and explore further. Families are also well-catered for with a dedicated Kids Menu and a selection of pasta dishes, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

To conclude our delightful meal, we shared the Cheesecake and Crème brûlée for dessert, both satisfyingly rich and perfectly executed. For those mindful of dietary considerations, it’s worth noting that Gale Street Inn Mundelein’s menu is impressively 90% gluten-free. The emphasis on fresh ingredients was evident in every dish, and truthfully, everything we tasted was delicious.
