Gilbert Street Bridge Reconstruction in Iowa City: Project Timeline and Traffic Impacts

Iowa City is currently undergoing a significant infrastructure project with the reconstruction of the Gilbert Street bridge. Demolition of the 52-year-old bridge, a key thoroughfare in the city, commenced last week, marking the beginning of a months-long rebuilding process that will impact local traffic and pedestrian routes.

Originally built in 1972, the Gilbert Street bridge spans Ralston Creek, strategically located just south of downtown Iowa City, close to popular spots like Falbo Bros. Pizzeria and the Vine neighborhood. A comprehensive bridge analysis revealed critical structural deficiencies, prompting the Iowa City City Council to prioritize its replacement, giving the green light to the project in early 2023. The project faced an initial setback when no bids were received during the first contractor search, leading to a year-long delay.

The Gilbert Street bridge replacement is a substantial undertaking, with an estimated budget of $4.4 million. This essential infrastructure work necessitates a full road closure on Gilbert Street, anticipated to last until late fall 2024.

Traffic Disruptions and Detour Routes on Gilbert Street

The Gilbert Street bridge reconstruction project will inevitably cause considerable disruptions for vehicular, bus, and pedestrian traffic. Commuters and local residents who regularly use Gilbert Street should be aware of the implemented detour routes.

For drivers typically heading south on Gilbert Street, the designated detour directs traffic west onto Burlington Street, then south onto Dubuque Street, before reconnecting with East Prentiss Street to return to Gilbert Street. This detour is reversed for northbound traffic, ensuring a continuous flow around the construction zone. Local access on Gilbert Street will be maintained up to Court Street, beyond which access will be restricted.

Changes to Bus Routes and Pedestrian Access

Public transportation users should note temporary adjustments to bus stops along Gilbert Street. Outbound bus routes will now pick up passengers two blocks south of the construction, at the intersection of Prentiss Street and Gilbert Street. Inbound bus routes have been rerouted to Gilbert Street’s intersection with Bowery Street for passenger pick-up.

Pedestrian traffic is also affected, with diversions directed to South Linn Street. While businesses in the area will remain accessible throughout the construction period, pedestrian crossing of Ralston Creek on Gilbert Street will be prohibited for safety reasons.

This Gilbert Street bridge project is a crucial investment in Iowa City’s infrastructure, ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of this vital transportation link. Residents and commuters are advised to plan for these disruptions and stay informed about project updates as the reconstruction progresses towards its late fall 2024 completion.
