Liberty Street, nestled at 653-9 Massachusetts Ave in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, is more than just a bar; it’s a vibrant mixology bar, a historic pub, and a lively performance venue, all rolled into one. Since opening its doors in 2014, Liberty Street has revitalized a location with a rich tavern history dating back over a century on Mass Ave. This unique establishment offers a compelling blend of historical ambiance, expertly crafted drinks, delicious food, and captivating live music, making it a must-visit destination in Indianapolis.
A Step Back in Time: Liberty Street’s Storied Past
The story of Liberty Street’s location is deeply intertwined with Indianapolis history. In 1892, James H. Moore, a prominent figure as Secretary of the Licensed Saloon Keepers of Indiana, partnered with James B. Wilson to establish the Moore & Wilson Saloon Health Office Sample Room in this very building. This marked the beginning of a long tradition of tavern use at this address. The building continued to operate as a tavern under various proprietors, even being leased at one point by the Indianapolis Brewing Company. Adding to its historical significance, the street itself was once named Liberty Street, a name that persisted until after World War II, reflecting a different era in the city’s narrative.
This corner building, often referred to as a “Flat Iron” due to its shape, is an original architectural gem from the early 1890s. Mass Ave was historically known for its Flat Iron buildings, and Liberty Street occupies one of only four remaining original structures of this type. Adjacent to it stands an even older building, dating back to 1872, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings on Mass Ave. This neighboring structure has served diverse purposes throughout its history, from a Harness Shop to a Grocery Store and even a restaurant, with both buildings historically featuring apartments on their upper floors.
Our Mahogany Bar
The Mahogany Bar: A Pre-Prohibition Centerpiece
The focal point of Liberty Street is undoubtedly its magnificent mahogany bar. This bar is not just a functional element; it’s a statement piece, meticulously constructed using components from a vintage pharmacy cabinet acquired from Hook’s Drugs. To complete the authentic pre-Prohibition era aesthetic, old-growth mahogany was sourced for the bar top. The vision was to create a bar that appears as though it has been a fixture since the 1890s, successfully evoking the atmosphere of a bygone era.
