Safe Haven from the Cold: Emergency Winter Shelter Opens in Lebanon, NH

An emergency winter shelter, a collaborative effort between the City of Lebanon and the Upper Valley Haven, commenced operations on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Providing a crucial refuge during the coldest months, the shelter will remain open daily from 5:00pm to 8:00am until further notice.

General Information

This low-barrier shelter warmly welcomes all individuals aged 18 and over who are in need of a safe and warm place to stay during the winter. With a capacity to accommodate 13 guests each night, the shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s important to note that cots cannot be reserved in advance. For individuals seeking shelter after capacity is reached, dedicated staff will be on hand to assist with contacting hotels or accessing the 211 helpline for alternative options. Referrals are not necessary to access the shelter’s services. Service animals and emotional support animals are welcome, ensuring inclusivity for guests with these needs. For the safety and well-being of everyone, weapons of any kind (including knives, box cutters, axes, and hatchets), firearms, and controlled substances are not permitted on the shelter premises or property.

Services Offered

Guests at the winter shelter will be provided with individual sleeping spaces in a communal room. While couples are not able to share a cot area, each guest will have a partitioned space and comfortable cot. A warm and nourishing hot dinner will be served every evening, and convenient to-go breakfast items will be available each morning before departure. Clean linens, towels, and pillows are provided nightly, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic stay. Essential hygiene supplies are readily accessible to all guests. The shelter also offers access to hot showers, accessible bathroom facilities, and complimentary Wi-Fi, recognizing the importance of these amenities for dignity and connectivity. For peace of mind, secure on-site storage is available for guests to safely store their personal belongings. Throughout their stay, guests will receive compassionate support from the dedicated staff and volunteers of Upper Valley Haven. Service Coordinators will be available to assist guests in developing both short-term and long-term goals related to crucial aspects of their lives, including financial stability, securing permanent housing, accessing healthcare, and addressing other essential needs. With the guidance and support of the staff, guests will have the opportunity to complete assessments and be added to the VT/NH Coordinated Entry lists, facilitating access to broader support systems. Referrals to local partner agencies will also be provided to ensure guests receive comprehensive and appropriate assistance in addressing their individual needs and achieving their goals.
