It’s the perfect chance to get up close and personal with the Mean Green and build anticipation for what promises to be a thrilling season of college basketball.
“Engaging with the Denton community is a top priority for us,” stated UNT Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley. “We’re excited to partner with the city of Denton and bring our basketball programs to the downtown square for this special ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ event. We believe it’s a fantastic way to connect with current fans and introduce UNT basketball to even more people in our community.”
The “Nightmare on Elm Street Basketball Tip-off” is free and open to everyone. Beyond the Mean Green teams, the event will also feature participation from Texas Woman’s University’s (TWU) nationally recognized NCAA Division II basketball team, recent national runner-up, and Denton Independent School District (ISD) teams. This collaborative approach highlights the strong basketball community within Denton and promises a diverse and engaging experience for all attendees. Details regarding the event’s start time are still to be announced, so keep an eye out for updates.
Last season saw remarkable success for both UNT basketball programs. The Mean Green women’s basketball team, under head coach Jason Burton, achieved a program-best 23 wins and clinched a share of the American Athletic Conference regular season championship. Meanwhile, the men’s team, led by head coach Ross Hodge, secured 19 wins, including impressive victories over LSU, Memphis, and SMU. Their journey extended to the second round of the 2024 NIT, making them one of only seven teams nationwide to have won a national postseason tournament game in each of the past four years.
