The comprehensive 42nd Street Connection Program is revolutionizing key subway lines, bringing modern enhancements to the heart of New York City’s transit network.
The centerpiece of this ambitious project is the redesigned 42nd Street Shuttle. Completed in March 2021, the Shuttle has been transformed into a fully accessible service, setting a new standard for station design. On the Times Square side, commuters are greeted by a spacious island platform with tracks on both sides. This innovative layout significantly improves boarding efficiency, reducing congestion and streamlining passenger flow. The station entrance is now larger and more modern, ensuring ADA accessibility for all riders.
The Grand Central side of the 42nd Street Shuttle has also undergone a major overhaul. The tracks have been consolidated into a two-track operation, creating a single, expansive platform. This expanded platform provides ample space for passengers, including those using wheelchairs or mobility devices, to comfortably access either track. Crucially, gaps between the platform and train edges have been eliminated, enhancing safety and ease of boarding for all.
Beyond the Shuttle, the 42nd Street Connection Program introduces a new in-station transfer between the Times Sq-42 St station and the 42 St-Bryant Park station. This vital link provides a free and seamless connection between the lines and the lines, significantly improving connectivity for riders traveling across Midtown. The walls of this new transfer are adorned with captivating mosaic artwork by Nick Cave, adding an artistic element to the commuter experience.
Further improvements throughout the 42nd Street subway complex include the installation of new elevators and escalators, expanded stairways, and updated digital information screens.
