Rooftop Pergola to Crown Starrett-Lehigh Building Renovation in West Chelsea, NYC

The iconic Starrett-Lehigh Building at 601 West 26th Street in Manhattan is set to undergo exciting renovations, with a stunning rooftop pergola terrace as the centerpiece. Approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), the project promises to enhance this historic West Chelsea office building, blending modern amenities with its rich architectural heritage.

RXR Realty, the current owners, are spearheading the renovation, entrusting the design vision to HLW and Studios Architecture. The approved plans include not only the spectacular tenth-floor terrace but also illuminated ground-floor signage and updated retail storefronts, all designed to revitalize this significant structure within the West Chelsea Historic District.

The highlight of the renovation is undoubtedly the expansive rooftop terrace. Imagine stepping out onto a landscaped oasis ten stories above the bustling city streets. This terrace is designed to be a true urban escape, featuring lush greenery, comfortable open-air seating, and elegant lounge areas. Adding a touch of sophistication and shade, pergolas will define dedicated lounge spaces, creating inviting retreats for building occupants. An art garden and a tranquil water feature are also incorporated into the design, promising a serene and inspiring environment. Safety and accessibility are key, with glass guardrails surrounding the terrace perimeter and elevator access complemented by an expanded stairway.

Beyond the rooftop haven, the Starrett-Lehigh Building will also receive updated signage. Illuminated marquees, proudly displaying “Starrett-Lehigh Building,” will be installed along Twelfth Avenue and 27th Street. This builds upon previous approvals for marquees on 28th Street and Eleventh Avenue, ensuring the building’s grand presence is clearly announced from multiple vantage points.

During the LPC approval process on August 9th, commissioners provided valuable feedback, requesting adjustments to the pergola height and bulkhead finish to minimize street-level visual impact. These refinements demonstrate a commitment to preserving the aesthetic integrity of the West Chelsea Historic District while allowing for modern enhancements.

The Starrett-Lehigh Building, already a landmark in its own right, is poised to become even more desirable with these renovations. The addition of the pergola-shaded rooftop terrace will offer a unique amenity in West Chelsea, providing a sought-after outdoor space for tenants. The updated signage and retail spaces will further enhance the building’s appeal and contribute to the vibrancy of the surrounding neighborhood.

While RXR Realty has not yet announced a completion date, anticipation is building for the unveiling of these exciting improvements to the Starrett-Lehigh Building, especially the much-anticipated rooftop pergola terrace that will redefine outdoor workspace in West Chelsea.
