Quebec Street Closures in Denver Announced for Pedestrian Safety Enhancements

Denver residents should be aware of upcoming temporary closures on sections of Quebec Street. The City of Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) has announced these closures to facilitate the Quebec Street Mobility and Pedestrian Safety Improvement Project. This initiative aims to significantly enhance neighborhood safety, improve pedestrian comfort, and increase accessibility along Quebec Street.

The project’s core objective is the installation of new sidewalks along Quebec Street, specifically between 12th Avenue and Montview Boulevard. This addresses crucial gaps in the existing sidewalk network, ensuring safer and more convenient pedestrian pathways. Furthermore, the project includes an upgrade to the traffic signal at the busy intersection of Quebec Street and 17th Avenue. Funding for these essential sidewalk improvements is provided through the Elevate Denver Bond, a city initiative dedicated to enhancing infrastructure and public spaces.

To ensure the safety of both construction crews and the public during these vital sidewalk installations, DOTI will implement full closures of Quebec Street. These closures will be strategically rolled out in segments of two to three blocks at a time during weekdays, allowing crews to work efficiently and safely. To minimize disruption, Quebec Street segments will be reopened to regular traffic flow each weekend.

The first phase of these closures begins today, December 2nd. Currently, Quebec Street is fully closed between 13th Avenue and Colfax Avenue. Traffic, both northbound and southbound, will be detoured around the closed section using Monaco Street Parkway and Syracuse Street as alternative routes. Motorists are advised to plan their commutes accordingly and factor in potential delays.

The anticipated schedule for the subsequent closures is as follows, weather permitting:

  • 13th Ave to Colfax Ave: December 2nd to December 20th
  • Colfax Ave to 17th Ave: January 2nd to February 17th
  • 17th Ave to Montview Ave: February 18th to April 3rd

While these weekday closures may cause temporary inconvenience, they are projected to significantly accelerate the project timeline. The original project completion was scheduled for September. Thanks to the efficiency gained through these closures, the sidewalk improvements on Quebec Street are now expected to be finished by early spring, weather permitting. This proactive approach ensures a faster delivery of enhanced safety and accessibility for the Quebec Street corridor.
