Located in the heart of the iconic Times Square, Regal Times Square stands as a premier movie destination at West 42nd Street in New York City. This state-of-the-art cinema offers an unparalleled moviegoing experience with its modern amenities and prime location, making it a must-visit for movie enthusiasts and tourists alike.
Regal Times Square boasts a rich history, evolving from the site of the former Harem Theatre, a symbol of old Times Square, to a beacon of the area’s revitalization. The 13-screen megaplex, part of the larger E-Walk entertainment complex, first opened its doors on November 12, 1999. With a seating capacity of 1,353, it quickly became a significant player in the Times Square entertainment scene. The cinema’s retro-Art Deco design, complete with vibrant murals and neon lighting, adds to its unique and captivating atmosphere, reminiscent of classic movie palaces while offering contemporary comforts.
Initially known as Loews 42nd Street E-Walk Theatre, the cinema faced minimal competition from older, less modern theaters in the vicinity. However, the landscape shifted dramatically with the arrival of AMC Empire 25 across the street in April 2000. This marked the beginning of Times Square’s transformation into a major filmgoing hub, with Regal Times Square playing a pivotal role in this cinematic renaissance.

In a significant industry shift, AMC acquired Loews Cineplex in January 2006. As a result of regulatory requirements, this Times Square location transitioned to become a Regal cinema on September 15, 2006. Regal continued to innovate at this location, introducing the very first RPX (Regal Premium Experience) auditorium four years later. RPX is renowned for providing “The best picture you have ever heard,” featuring crystal-clear digital projection, a massive screen, and immersive surround sound. Further enhancing the cinematic offerings, Regal Times Square unveiled a 4DX auditorium in 2018, allowing audiences to experience movies in a dynamic and immersive 4D format. Notably, recent updates in 2024 have positioned this theater as the home of the world’s largest 4DX auditorium, and the only location in North America featuring two 4DX installations, solidifying its position as a leader in immersive cinema experiences.
Today, Regal Times Square continues to operate with cutting-edge technology including two 4DX screens and the RPX auditorium. While some older design elements may remain, recent renovations underscore Regal’s commitment to providing a modern and exceptional moviegoing environment. With a total seating capacity of 1590 across its auditoriums, including recliner seating in select theaters, Regal Times Square on West 42nd Street remains a cornerstone of entertainment in New York City, inviting visitors to experience the magic of movies in the heart of Times Square.
