American Dream in East Rutherford is expanding its family-friendly attractions with a brand-new Sesame Street Learn & Play Educational Center. Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind the iconic “Sesame Street,” is bringing this interactive experience to the Bergen County megamall, promising a blend of fun and learning for young visitors.
The Sesame Street Learn & Play Educational Center, anticipated to open later this year, will be a significant addition to the already vast entertainment offerings at American Dream. While an exact opening date remains unannounced, the mall’s website has already listed the exhibit as “coming soon,” generating excitement among families in the region. This new center will join a diverse array of attractions within the 3 million-square-foot complex, including the Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park, DreamWorks Water Park, Big SNOW indoor ski slope, and the Dream Wheel observation wheel. American Dream also boasts over 200 retail stores and 50 dining options, featuring flagship locations for beloved brands like Toys R Us and Babies R Us.
Bryan Gaus, Senior Vice President and General Manager of American Dream, highlighted the enduring appeal of the Sesame Street brand. “’Sesame Street’ has been a cherished brand for over 50 years,” Gaus stated. “Generations of children have grown up with the iconic show, and now kids and those young at heart can engage with ‘Sesame Street’ firsthand at American Dream.” This partnership aims to provide an immersive experience that extends the educational values of the television program into a physical space.
Jennifer Ahearn, Senior Vice President at Sesame Workshop, revealed that the American Dream location will be the first of several Sesame Street Learn & Play Educational Centers planned for the U.S. The 13,000-square-foot exhibit is designed to transport children into the heart of Sesame Street, offering various themed zones. Kids can explore a rainforest within Elmo’s World, engage in imaginative play at Hooper’s Store, discover Abby Cadabby’s magical garden, and interact with the world of Bert and Ernie.

Beyond character-themed areas, the center will also feature educational activities focused on creativity and learning. A Community Center will host arts and crafts sessions, while the Bike Shop area will introduce children to basic mechanical concepts like cause and effect through cranks and gears. The “Sesame Street” playground will encourage physical activity and exploration of nature with climbing and sliding structures. Recognizing the needs of younger visitors, a separate play area will be designated for toddlers.
To enhance the immersive experience, the Sesame Street Learn & Play Educational Center will offer numerous photo opportunities. Families can pose in front of the iconic 123 Sesame Street building facade and Oscar’s trash can. Adding to the excitement, Big Bird will be present to share stories from his nest, and Abby and Elmo are scheduled to make surprise appearances, ensuring memorable moments for all visitors.
“From educational play centers to theme parks to live shows and more, Sesame Workshop has always been committed to creating engaging, joyful experiences for children, families and fans,” Ahearn emphasized. The Sesame Street Learn & Play Educational Center at American Dream promises to be a valuable addition to the mall’s attractions, providing a unique and enriching experience for families seeking both entertainment and educational opportunities.
