Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, a cornerstone of Greensboro, North Carolina, has a rich history deeply rooted in community service and a steadfast commitment to Christian values. For over a century, this congregation has been dedicated to spreading the teachings of Jesus Christ and fostering a welcoming environment for all. However, the journey of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church began under a different name and at a different location, as South Elm Street Baptist Church.
The story of this enduring church started in a humble store building on July 2, 1899. It was here, fueled by the dedication of seven charter members who had previously gathered for Sunday School, that South Elm Street Baptist Church was officially established. Just eight days later, demonstrating their commitment to spiritual leadership, the newly formed congregation called Rev. J. A. Hackney to serve as their first pastor. This marked the official beginning of what would become a long and impactful presence in Greensboro’s religious community, starting as South Elm Street Baptist Church.
As the congregation grew and evolved, so too did its physical location and name. In 1900, seeking a more permanent home, South Elm Street Baptist Church acquired a small “country church building.” This building was relocated to East Whittington Street, and with the move came a new name: Southside Baptist Church. This change reflected the church’s growing identity and its place within the community. However, the transitions were not yet complete.
In 1906, the church building was once again moved, this time to Asheboro Street. Accompanying this relocation was yet another name change, as Southside Baptist Church became Asheboro Street Baptist Church. Throughout these early years, the congregation of what was originally South Elm Street Baptist Church demonstrated resilience and adaptability, consistently expanding its facilities to accommodate its growing membership and ministries. This period of growth also saw the church branch out, establishing a mission church in 1956, which later became Parkway Baptist Church, further extending its reach and influence in Greensboro.
A significant chapter in the church’s history unfolded in 1964. Under the leadership of Dr. A. L. Parker, then pastor, Asheboro Street Baptist Church made its final move to West Friendly Road. This relocation was made possible by a generous contribution of property from First Baptist Church, a sister congregation. With this move and in recognition of its new location, the church adopted the name Friendly Road Baptist Church. As West Friendly Road eventually became West Friendly Avenue, the church embraced its current and well-known name: Friendly Avenue Baptist Church.
Despite the changes in name and location over the decades, the core values and spirit of the congregation that began as South Elm Street Baptist Church have remained constant. Throughout its history, whether known as South Elm Street Baptist Church, Southside Baptist, or Asheboro Street Baptist, this church has been characterized by its loving and generous people. Their unwavering commitment to serving their community, utilizing their talents and resources to benefit others, and glorifying Christ has been the consistent thread connecting each chapter of this church’s remarkable story, starting from its humble beginnings as South Elm Street Baptist Church.
