Discover the Magic of Street Performers in Cambridge: Your Guide to Permits & Public Performance

Cambridge, Massachusetts, is renowned for its vibrant arts scene, and Street Performers are an integral part of this cultural tapestry. From musicians and jugglers to living statues and performance artists, street performers bring energy and creativity to the city’s public spaces. If you’re an artist looking to share your talents, Cambridge welcomes you! The City of Cambridge has streamlined the process for obtaining a Street Performer Permit, making it easier than ever to bring your act to the streets.

Easy Online Permitting for Cambridge Street Performers

In January 2023, Cambridge Arts launched a fully online application system for Street Performer Permits. This digital transformation simplifies the permitting process, allowing performers to apply from anywhere, at any time. Ready to perform? Apply for your free permit through the online portal: https://cambridgema.portal.opengov.com/categories/1135/record-types/6855.

Whether you’re a solo act or part of a group, each performer needs to obtain an individual permit. The best part? No auditions are required! Cambridge embraces a diverse range of talents and encourages all performers, regardless of residency, to apply and contribute to the city’s dynamic atmosphere.

Please note that if you have received a non-criminal citation within the past year, any outstanding fines must be settled with the City Clerk’s office at Cambridge City Hall before applying for a new permit. Once paid, present your receipt to Cambridge Arts staff to proceed with your permit application.

Ensuring a Harmonious Street Performance Environment

To maintain a positive experience for everyone – performers, businesses, residents, and audiences – Cambridge Arts employs street performance monitors. These monitors ensure compliance with city ordinances and help balance the interests of all stakeholders.

Should you have any concerns or complaints regarding street performers, the Cambridge Arts Council is your point of contact. During office hours, you can reach them at (617) 349-4380 or via email at [email protected]. For disturbances outside of office hours, please contact the Cambridge City Police Department Dispatch Desk at 349-3300.

When reporting an issue, please be prepared to provide:

A Rich Heritage of Street Performance in Cambridge

Cambridge boasts a long and fascinating history of street performance. Stephen H. Baird, Founder and Executive Director of Street Arts & Busker Advocates, has documented this vibrant history in his work, “The History and Cultural Impact of Street Performing in America; Revival of Street Performances in Cambridge 1966-2003.” Dive deeper into Cambridge’s street performing scene history to appreciate its rich cultural roots.

In a move to further support street arts, Cambridge eliminated permit fees in January 2019. This change coincided with the expansion of permitted performance locations, the inclusion of performative visual arts, and the potential for designated performance zones for larger acts. After a temporary suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Street Performer program joyfully resumed in July 2021.

For detailed regulations, refer to the City of Cambridge Street Performance Ordinance.
