East Wyoming Avenue Bridge in Philadelphia Closed for Safety Reasons

Philadelphia, PA – The City of Philadelphia’s Department of Streets has announced the immediate closure of the East Wyoming Avenue Bridge. This closure, effective Tuesday, December 10, 2024, impacts the section of Wyoming Street that passes over Frankford Creek, Fishers Lane/I Street, and the Juniata Golf Course, specifically between Maple Lane and Ramona Avenue.

This action, taken under Section 4902(a) of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, is a necessary measure to ensure public safety. Inspections revealed critical deficiencies in the bridge’s steel support beams. These structural issues compromise the bridge’s ability to safely bear legally mandated loads, necessitating its closure to all vehicular traffic.

While the roadway is closed for vehicles, pedestrian access will be maintained. The sidewalks on the East Wyoming Street Bridge will remain open, and residents can still access the trail located beneath the bridge.

Motorists who typically use Wyoming Street at this location will need to follow a designated detour. For eastbound traffic, the detour route is: Wyoming Street to Whitaker Avenue, then to Luzerne Street, followed by G Street to Hunting Park Avenue, and finally onto Castor Avenue. Westbound traffic should use the reverse route: Castor Avenue to Hunting Park Avenue, then to G Street, Luzerne Street, Whitaker Avenue, and back to Wyoming Street.

The Streets Department is implementing warning signs along Wyoming Avenue and Castor Avenue to inform drivers about the closure. Barricades will be placed at both ends of the bridge on Wyoming Avenue, and advanced warning signs indicating the bridge closure will be posted at the intersections of Maple Lane and Ramona Avenue.

The Department of Streets appreciates the understanding and cooperation of residents and commuters during this disruption.
